Cossacks knock off No. 1 Chargers on Homecoming

VOLGA – Homecoming, sweet Homecoming.

Third-ranked Sioux Valley knocked off No. 1 Sioux Falls Christian 21-14 on Friday night, pushing its record to 4-0.

Seniors Daymein Lucas and Tyler Schwartz carried the load for the Cossacks.

Lucas ran 32 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns.

Schwartz added 123 yards and a score on the ground while also coming up with three receptions covering 80 yards.

The Cossacks totaled 491 yards of offense – including 388 on 69 rushes – to the Chargers’ 122 (92 rushing).

Schwartz got loose up the right sideline for a 56-yard scoring scamper at the 10:41 mark of the second quarter. Brennan Stoltenberg’s first of three successful PAT kicks made it 7-0.

Parker Nelson took the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to the house and also ran in the two-point conversion to give Sioux Falls Christian its only lead of the game at 8-7.

That’s where the score stood until midway through the third, when Lucas blasted through the middle of the line for a 3-yard touchdown. That put Sioux Valley ahead 14-8.

Lucas scored on another run up the middle, this time from 10 yards out, to push the margin to 21-8 with 8:11 remaining in the game.

The Chargers quickly answered as Christian Mulder caught a 14-yard TD toss from Jacob Just.

But the home team held on down the stretch to push its winning streak to four games.

Jake Schneider and Tristan Richarz paced the Cossack defense with seven tackles apiece. Andrew Mullaney added five stops, and Chase Ringheimer and Dalton Hanson had four apiece.

Noah Puetz went 6-of-14 for 103 yards through the air. Jaxton Schiller had three catches for 23 yards.

Nelson picked up 56 yards on 16 rushes for the Chargers. Just was 2-of-6 for 30 yards. Tyler Van Horssen led five players in double figures with 12 tackles.

The game was delayed for an hour following the first quarter due to a Tornado Warning and lightning in the area.

Sioux Valley, which has outscored its opponents a combined 122-34 this season, heads to Lennox on Friday. Sioux Falls Christian plays host to Elk Point-Jefferson.

WHITE – Clayton Koppatschek scored a pair of long touchdowns as the Dolphins beat the Elks for their first win of the season.

The junior had a 60-yard punt return for a TD and a 60-yard pick-six.

Trace Vierhuf ran for 119 yards and a score. Cody Bauman also ran for a TD and went 6-of-10 for 63 yards with three INTs through the air.

Deubrook Area (1-3) plays host to Oldham-Ramona/ Rutland and Elkton-Lake Benton (1-3) heads to Estelline on Friday.

• Colman-Egan 47, Estelline 13

COLMAN – The Hawks opened up a 33-0 lead after a quarter en route to the victory.

Bodee Groos went 3-of-3 for 62 yards with a touchdown and ran twice for 48 yards and another score.

Bodee Groos opened the scoring with a 36-yard TD rush and then hit Kade Groos for a 24-yard scoring toss. Keith Crisp followed with a 20-yard scoring scamper.

Kade Groos returned an interception 6 yards for a touchdown and Trey McKnight found the end zone on a 7-yard rush as Colman-Egan was ahead 33-0 after a quarter.

The Hawks extended the advantage to 47-0 in the second as Eli Bowen scored on a 1-yard run and Nate Tolley on a 15-yarder.

Dawson Tolley finished with 73 rushing yards, Crisp 43, Nate Tolley 27 and McKnight 10.

Nate Tolley also had a 28-yard reception and was 1-of-1 passing with a 38-yard completion to Dalton Voelker. Chase Hemmer added a 10-yard catch.

Sam McKay and Eli Bowen led the defense with nine tackles apiece. Cole Tolley added seven stops and Alec Landis had six. McKnight recovered a fumble.

Estelline’s Marcis Hausman had a 21-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Miller in the second quarter. Jake Goodfellow added a 1-yard TD plunge in the third.

Hausman picked up 114 yards on the ground and Goodfellow added 34.

Colman-Egan (4-0) travels to De Smet and Estelline (0-5) plays host to Elkton-Lake Benton next week.

• Mt. Vernon/Plankinton 48, Flandreau 20

MT. VERNON – Jesse Hastings ran for 112 yards and a touchdown as the Titans topped the Fliers.

Hayden Haak was 2-of-2 for 89 yards with a TD.

Hastings scored on a 16-yard run in the opening quarter. Haak hit Dane Rihanek for a 72-yard score in the second, before Coltin Tobin had a pick-six to make it 18-0.

Flandreau got on the board at the 5:14 mark of the second as Michael Witte had an 8-yard TD toss to Connor LeBrun.

Tobin scored from 8 yards out later in the second and Haak’s two-point conversion run put MVP on top 26-6.

Witte’s 17-yard scoring pass to Bastian Erickson pulled the Fleirs within 26-12 at halftime.

Tobin (4 yards) and Haak (24 yards) had touchdown rushes in the third. Dane Rihanek added a two-pointer as the Titans moved ahead 40-12.

Witte added a 10-yard scoring pass to Austin Weber with 4:30 remaining in the game. The quarterback ran in the conversion.

MVP’s Nolan Sampson scored on a 30-yard run with 2:03 to go and a successful two-point conversion provided for the final margin.

The Titans outgained the Fliers 471-268 in total yards of offense, including a 343-160 advantage on the ground.

Witte finished 8-of-20 for 108 yards with three TDs and three INTs.

Andrew Julson picked up 96 yards on the ground. Nate Kneebone had three receptions for 49 yards.

Kneebone paced the defense with nine tackles, while LeBrun, Julson, Brady Johnson, Witte and Matt Pauley added six apiece.

Flandreau (0-4) plays host to Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan and Mt. Vernon/Plankinton (3-2) welcomes Winner next week.
