Cossacks move to 7-0

VOLGA – Tyler Schwartz had a hand in four touchdowns and Daymein Lucas had another solid game as top-ranked and undefeated Sioux Valley handled Elk Point-Jefferson 48-19 on Senior Night Friday.

The Cossacks led 48-0 after three quarters.

Schwartz ran for two touchdowns, had a TD reception and also threw for a score. He finished with 109 yards on six rushes.

Lucas picked up 186 yards on 15 attempts and scored twice. He has 1,436 yards – a 205.1 average – and 19 TDs through seven games.

Lucas opened the scoring with a 4-yard stroll up the middle just 3:15 into the game.

Schwartz took a handoff and then hit Chase Ringheimer for a 15-yard score on fourth down to push the margin to 14-0 late in the first quarter.

Schwartz sandwiched scoring scampers of 75 and 6 yards around a 28-yard TD catch from Noah Puetz as the Cossacks moved ahead 34-0 at halftime.

Lucas capped his big day with a 62-yard burst to the end zone 70 seconds into the third stanza. Connor Logan’s 14-yard run later in the frame made it 48-0.

Brennan Stoltenberg went 6-of-7 on PAT kicks to push his school-record career total to 44 makes in his career.

Logan paced the defense with seven tackles, and Andrew Mullaney and Schwartz added six apiece.

Sioux Valley racked up 517 yards of offense, including 427 on the ground. Puetz finished 2-of-4 for 75 yards with the TD. Jaxton Schiller had a 47-yard catch.

The Huskies’ Logan Donelan was 6-of-13 for 81 yards and Brody Weavill rushed for 90 yards.

In the fourth, Donelan had a 27-yard TD toss to Jared Merkley, who finished with 39 yards on three receptions. Weavill scored on a 3-yard run and Preston Fejfar on a 4-yarder with 41 seconds remaining.

Fejfar had 13 tackles and Jacob Quiett 11.

The Huskies had 258 yards of offense, including 157 rushing.

Sioux Valley (7-0) looks to cap a perfect regular season with a tough road matchup against Bridgewater-Emery/ Ethan (6-1) next Friday night at 7 in Bridgewater. The Seahawks beat McCook Central/ Montrose 27-0 on Friday.

Elk Point-Jefferson (2-5) is host to Vermillion next week.

• Colman-Egan 38, Castlewood 5

COLMAN – The Hawks (7-0) clinched at least a share of the Dakota Valley Conference football title with a 38-5 defeat of previously-unbeaten Castle-wood on Friday night.

Bodee Groos led the way with 195 rushing yards and a pair of scores. He was 5-of-9 for 60 yards through the air.

Keith Crisp ran for 64 yards and a pair of scores. Trey McKnight picked up 56 yards on just six carries. Kade Groos ran for 43 yards and a TD. Ryker Hawkins had the team’s other score.

Dalton Voelker had two receptions for 39 yards and Kade Groos three for 21.

Colman-Egan totaled 422 yards, including 362 rushing.

Bodee Groos paced the defense with eight tackles, while Voelker and McKnight added six apiece. Alec Landis totaled five tackles, including a sack.

Crisp opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run. The Warriors cut the deficit in half via Wyatt Mack’s 36-yard field goal later in the first quarter.

Bodee Groos (25 yards) and Kade Groos (10 yards) both had a scoring scamper in the second to make it 20-3 at halftime.

Bodee Groos added a 3-yard TD rush in the third to push the margin to 26-3.

Crisp scored from 7 yards out early in the fourth. Castlewood scored its final points on a safety. Hawkins’ 4-yard TD run provided for the final margin.

The Warriors’ Brandon Benike went 9-of-22 for 70 yards through the air. Skyler Solsaa ran for 72 yards and Noah Wiersma 32.

Colman-Egan can clinch the DVC title outright with a win or a Castlewood loss next week.

The Hawks play host to Arlington/Lake Preston (6-1) and the Warriors (6-1) head to Elkton-Lake Benton.

Castlewood beat ALP 34-30 at home last week.

• Arlington/Lake Preston 44, Estelline 0

ARLINGTON – Devon Heuer ran for 235 yards and three touchdowns on just eight attempts as the Badgers bounced back from their first loss of the season.

He had scoring rushes of 66 and 36 yards early in the game. Byron Bumann’s 1-yard TD plunge made it 22-0 after a quarter.

Tate Larsen, who finished with 101 yards, added a 16-yard scoring scamper as the lead increased to 30-0 at halftime.

Heuer found the end zone from 16 yards out in the third to make it 36-0.

Jasper Denison, who finished with 42 yards on two carries, closed out the scoring with a 25-yard TD rush in the fourth.

Heuer went 2-of-9 for 23 yards through the air as Allen Strande had a 14-yard reception.

ALP racked up 433 yards of offense, including 410 on the ground, while limiting the Redmen to 71 yards.

Estelline’s Marcis Hausman ran for 16 yards and had completions of 20 yards to Davon Dahl and 16 yards to Zach Loomis.

Through seven games, Heuer has accounted for 32 touchdowns. He’s run for 1,199 yards and 24 scores while passing for 605 yards and seven TDs. Heuer also has a pick-six.

Both teams wrap up the regular season on Friday as Arlington/Lake Preston (6-1) hits the road to face undefeated Colman-Egan with a share of the Dakota Valley Conference title on the line and Estelline (0-7) travels to Deubrook Area.

• De Smet 30, Deubrook Area 7

DE SMET – Gage Gruenhagen ran for a pair of touchdowns, while Cade Birkel and Zach Wolkow added one apiece for the Bulldogs.

Birkel finished with 134 yards on 20 rushes, Wolkow had 95 yards on 19 attempts and Gruenhagen picked up 48 yards on 21 carries. Birkel also threw for 39 yards.

Gruenhagen had five tackles.

The Dolphins’ Clayton Koppatschek rushed five times for 101 yards and a score. Cody Bauman went 5-of-14 for 84 yards.

De Smet finished the regular season with a 4-4 record. Deubrook Area (2-5) plays host to Estelline next week.

• Beresford 39, Flandreau 0

BERESFORD – The Watchdogs (1-6) beat the Fliers (0-7) for their first win of the season.

Both teams close out the season next week as Flandreau heads to Dell Rapids and Beresford is host to Mt. Vernon/Plankinon
