Cossacks, Pheasants reach BEC Championship


BALTIC/FLANDREAU – Sioux Valley beat McCook Central/Montrose 80-64 and Parker edged Flandreau 53-50 in the Big East Conference Boys’ Basketball Tournament semifinals Friday night.

The Cossacks (7-0) and Pheasants (7-1) play for the title tonight at 6:30 in Volga. The Fliers (4-3) take on the Fighting Cougars (3-4) in the third-place game at 5 p.m.

• Sioux Valley 80, McCook Central/Montrose 64

Max Nielson posted a double-double and the Cossacks took control with a big third quarter.

The Fighting Cougars were up 21-17 after a period and 38-37 at halftime.

Sioux Valley outscored MCM 29-6 in the third to grab a 66-44 advantage.

Nielson scored 20 points and dished out 10 assists.

Oliver Vincent had 16 points, Ryan Schuster 15 and Kelton Vincent 14. The latter Vincent added six dimes and five steals. Schuster was 6-of-7 from the floor in nearly 26 minutes of action.

Parker Puetz totaled seven points and seven rebounds.

The Cossacks shot 47.7 percent from the field, including a 12-of-28 clip from 3-point range, and committed just seven turnovers while forcing 21 – 14 of which came on steals.

The Fighting Cougars’ Isaac McCormick finished with 21 points, Kolton Lindstrom 15 and Collin Kolbeck 13 to go with seven boards.

Tied at 13s after 8 minutes, the Pheasants were up 28-22 at halftime and 37-30 at the end of three.

Kaden Pesicka had 20 points and Cole Jurgens and Davin Fuller added 13 apiece.

The Fliers’ Tash Lunday posted a double-double of 25 points and 18 rebounds.

Alex Anderson had 10 points, four steals, three rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks. Chase LeBrun chipped in with eight points.
