Cossacks, Pheasants reach BEC final


BERESFORD/GARRETSON – Sioux Valley beat Beresford 65-56 and Parker defeated Flandreau 52-41 in the Big East Conference Boys’ Basketball Tournament semifinals Friday night.

The Cossacks (6-2) and Pheasants (5-1) face off in the championship game tonight at 6:30 in Chester.

Sioux Valley beat Parker 88-71 during the regular-season matchup Dec. 17 in Volga.

The Fliers (3-4) and Watchdogs (3-5) play for third place at 5 p.m.

In the consolation semifinals, McCook Central/Montrose dropped Chester Area 57-41 and Baltic topped Garretson 80-66.

The Fighting Cougars (3-4) face the Bulldogs (3-5) in the fifth-place game at 3:30 p.m. and the Flyers (1-8) take on the Blue Dragons (3-6) for seventh at 2 p.m.

 Sioux Valley 65, Beresford 56

The Cossacks used a balanced attack to drop the host Watchdogs.

Ryan Schuster finished with 18 points and six rebounds.

Max Nielson had 14 points and six assists.

Parker Puetz contributed 12 points and nine boards.

The score was tied 16-all after a quarter and Sioux Valley was up 31-29 at halftime. The Cossacks opened up a 45-35 advantage through three.

Beresford’s Tyler Kropenske and Beau VanGelder both scored 14 points and Dallas Davis added 10. Jack Antonson totaled six points and 10 boards, while Alec Atwood dished out seven dimes.

 Parker 52, Flandreau 41

The Pheasants led 16-9 after a quarter and 34-15 at halftime en route to the win over the Fliers.

The score was 44-29 through three.

Flandreau’s Connor LeBrun finished with 19 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Nate Kneebone had nine points, six boards, two dimes and a pair of steals.

Tash Lunday added eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.
