Cossacks qualify for state tournament

PIERRE – The Cossacks are heading to the state tournament.

Trevor Hanson posted a big double-double as third-seeded Sioux Valley powered past No. 14 Hot Springs 79-57 in a Class A Round of 16 boys’ basketball game Thursday evening in the Capital City.

The senior finished with 34 points on 16-of-23 shooting and grabbed 15 rebounds.

“They had a lot of quickness; we had to get our inside game going,” said Sioux Valley coach Bill Vincent. “Hanson was huge inside.”

The Cossacks led 19-13 after a quarter and 35-27 at halftime. Hanson put in 14 points in the third to help Sioux Valley extend the lead to 60-43 heading to the fourth.

The Bison pulled within 10 points at 62-52; however, Max Nielson opened a 17-2 run with a 3-pointer with 4 minutes remaining as Sioux Valley pulled away.

Hanson then sandwiched buckets around a Trevor Olson trey. Ryan Schuster connected from deep, Jake Schneider converted in the lane and Hanson added a layup to make it 79-54.

“We got some great defensive bench play – Daymein Lucas, Tyler Schwartz and Brennan Stoltenberg sparked us defensively,” Vincent added. “Max Nielson really did a nice job of controlling the pace of the game.

“Jake Schneider was huge on defense, drawing three charges – we had four as a team. Those are game-changing plays. Trevor Olson and Ryan Schuster put a lot of pressure on the Hot Springs defense by filling the wings on the offensive break, tiring out and wearing down the Bison.”

Nielson also logged a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists. The sophomore went 4-of-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 on 3s.

Olson finished with 12 points and Schuster had 11. Schneider totaled six points, nine boards and six dimes.

Sioux Valley shot 50.8 percent (31-of-61) from the field. Daymein Lucas had the team’s other bucket.

Hot Springs finished at 32.3 percent (20-of-62).

Logan Brandt had 17 points, Logan Gooder 13 and Matt Norton 10.

The Bison wrapped up the season with a 14-9 record.

Sioux Valley is the No. 3 seed in the Class A State Boys’ Basketball Tournament and takes on No. 6 Dakota Valley (17-6) in the quarterfinals Thursday at 8:45 p.m. at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City.

It will be a rematch of sorts, as the 16th-seeded Panthers defeated the top-seeded Cossacks in overtime in the Round of 16 last season in Sioux Falls.

Notes: The Cossacks have now qualified for state 12 times. They placed third in 1972 (Class B), 1973 (Class B) and 2001 (Class A), also advancing to the tourney in 1988, 2000, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2016.
