Cossacks rally past Bulldogs in Region 2B first-round matchup

VOLGA – Sioux Valley rallied to beat Madison 3-2 in a Region 2B first-round game Tuesday night at Hoff Field.

Trevor Olson threw five shutout innings in relief to earn the win on the mound, giving up three hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

Daymein Lucas led off the bottom of the third inning with a double and Chase Ringheimer walked with one out. Matt Larson’s flyout to center moved Lucas to third base.

Cole Gross followed with an RBI single to pull the Cossacks within 2-1.

In the fourth, Tyler Schwartz drew a one-out base on balls. Olson was hit by a pitch and Lucas walked to load the bases.

Back-to-back two-out walks by Ringheimer and Larson forced in Schwartz and Olson to give Sioux Valley a 3-2 lead.

Larson finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. Zack Puetz had the team’s other hit – a double.

The Cossacks drew eight free passes, including seven walks.

The Bulldogs scored a pair of unearned runs against Sioux Valley starter Nick Strasburg, who gave up two hits and two walks while striking out three batters.

Oakley Denne reached on an error to open the game and Josh Giles walked. Riley Janke’s RBI double got Madison on the scoreboard.

Another error allowed Koby Christiansen to reach to get the second frame underway. Josh Bernard singled and Matt Williams walked to load the bases.

Denne was hit by a pitch with one out to plate Christiansen and push the margin to 2-0.

The Bulldogs also got hits from Giles, Noah Guse and Christiansen.

Giles took the loss after surrendering three runs on three hits and seven walks with one strikeout in five innings of work. Seth Thennis pitched a scoreless sixth, allowing one hit with a strikeout.

The Cossacks (11-2) take on the Quarriers in the Region 2B South Division championship game Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Dell Rapids. Oldham-Ramona/Rutland faces Deuel/Castlewood/ Hamlin for the Region 2B North Division title at 5:30 p.m.

The winners play at 7:30 p.m. for a spot in the Class B State High School Baseball Tournament.

Notes: Sioux Valley completed a regular-season sweep of Madison. The Cossacks beat the Bulldogs 16-2 (five innings) and 13-8 in a home doubleheader April 23. … Sioux Valley and Dell Rapids split a doubleheader April 2 in Volga, with the Quarriers winning the opener 9-3 and the Cossacks taking the nightcap by a 4-3 margin.
