Cossacks roll in BEC tourney opener

VOLGA – Sioux Valley again steamrolled Beresford, winning 70-31 in the first round of the Big East Conference Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Thursday night.

The Cossacks were up 23-7 after a quarter and 38-15 at the half. It was 61-27 through three.

Parker Puetz dropped in 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Kelton Vincent added 11 markers and Oliver Vincent 10. The former dished out nine assists and came up with six steals, while Hayden Ruesink added eight points and eight rebounds.

Sioux Valley shot 44.6 percent from the field and committed just five turnovers. The Watchdogs finished at 26.7 percent with 16 giveaways.

Sioux Valley (8-0) is host to Parker in a semifinal matchup tonight.

FLANDREAU – The Fighting Cougars shocked the undefeated Fliers.

Gavin Gordon scored 19 points and Boston Katzer 10 for MCM (3-4).

For Flandreau (5-1), Tash Lunday finished with 13 points and Chase LeBrun 11 – both players grabbed nine rebounds. Liam Streitz added nine markers.

Flandreau takes on Baltic this evening in a consolation semifinal.

In the other BEC tourney games, Chester Area topped Baltic 50-47 and Parker beat Garretson 57-53.
