Cossacks secure comeback victory

DE SMET – It was a thrilling come-from-behind victory for the Sioux Valley girls’ basketball team Tuesday night.

The Cossacks trailed by seven points going into the fourth quarter and battled back to come away with a 45-44 win.

The Lady Bulldogs came out of the gates with intensity and led 16-7 after the first quarter. The teams were more even in the second quarter, but De Smet still carried a 10-point lead into halftime. Sioux Valley then outscored De Smet 10-7 in the third quarter.

Sioux Valley went on an 8-0 run in the fourth quarter to take a 36-35 lead with 5:28 left in the game. The teams then traded baskets and Julia Schneider hit a three with 1:02 left in the game to give the Cossacks a 43-39 lead and then made two free throws to put the team up four again with 11 seconds left to put the game away.

Julia Schneider led the way for Sioux Valley with 15 points and eight rebounds. Abbie Schneider scored 10 points. Isabelle Bloker had eight points. Reagan Johnson and Ashley Bjerke each had six points.

The Cossacks shot 34% from the field and were 7-for-26 from three. They were 4-for-7 at the free throw line and forced 23 turnovers.

De Smet was led by Kennadi Bucholz who had 16 points and nine rebounds. Camryn Schmidt had nine points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Bulldogs shot 30.6% from the field and were 1-for-10 from three. They were 13-for-17 on free throws and outrebounded the Cossacks 41-20.

Sioux Valley has now won three games in a row and will face Baltic in the Big East Tournament on Thursday at 7 p.m.
