VOLGA – Sioux Valley swept Deuel in a season-opening Lake Central Conference volleyball matchup Tuesday at the Cossack Center.

The home team won by the set scores of 25-13, 25-15 and 25-19.

“It’s a good first match. We needed to get our feet wet and I think we did that with this one,” said Sioux Valley coach Jill Vincent.

The Cossacks were consistent at the net, getting 10 kills apiece from Lynsey Stevens and Nikole Ziegler.

“We have a lot of team chemistry, so it’s really nice to be able to pass well early on in the sets so that we can get the ball to the net to our hitters,” Vincent added.

Rachel Miller (11) and Miakken Vincent (six) combined for 17 set assists.

Ziegler and Bryn Tvedt collected 10 digs apiece.

Sioux Valley’s starters played a majority of the match, as the Cossacks used just two reserves and did not have a libero.

“Last year we lost our libero, so this year we’re just kind of going with that core group of six and seeing what they can do,” Vincent noted. “But I think through time our bench will develop and we’ll be able to play more players.”

When asked if the team would use a libero at any point this season, Vincent added, “Not as of now, because I need all my hitters in the front row. They’ve been working really well together and it’s fun to see, like, Lynsey be able to play the back row. Instead of playing middle back, she’s left back. So we’re trying out some new roles, and so far I think they like them; they bought in.”

The Cardinals got 10 kills and seven digs from Kendra Damm. Jaydyn TeGantvoort added four digs and Kenzie Kasten dished out 11 set assists.

Deuel heads to Groton Area on Thursday.

Sioux Valley play host to Howard on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
