VOLGA – Sioux Valley swept Flandreau 25-9, 25-17, 25-23 in a Big East Conference/ Lake Central Conference volleyball matchup Tuesday that lasted just 57 minutes.

“I thought we passed really well and started off hot in the first set with hardly any hitting errors, so that was nice to see,” said Cossack coach Jill Vincent.

Sioux Valley cruised through the first two sets and appeared to be in control in the third, before the Fliers rallied to move ahead 20-19, prompting a Cossack timeout.

Nikole Ziegler took over down the stretch, quickly knotting the score at 20-all with a kill.

Back-to-back Flandreau hitting errors put the hosts ahead 22-20, and Ziegler followed with another kills.

Marianna Pavlis had a kill and a block to pull the Fliers within 23-22. Ziegler countered with a kill for the Cossacks, but Flandreau again pulled within a point at 24-23 via Makenzey Burggraff’s kill.

Ziegler ended it with a kill soon thereafter.

“She was really getting up on top of the ball once we started passing so we could get that ball to the net and the Rachel (Miller) could start getting her some perfect sets. She really takes advantage of those,” Vincent said of the senior outside hitter.

Ziegler totaled 15 kills, 14 digs and three service aces.

Miakken Vincent totaled a career-high 10 kills to go with three blocks. Bryn Tvedt had four kills and 10 digs, and Lynsey Stevens added four kills and six digs.

Rachel Miller dished out 32 set assists and also chipped in with three blocks. Bethany Rennich tallied nine digs and a pair of aces.

Sioux Valley (17-3, 2-2 BEC/5-0 LCC) has now won 13 consecutive matches.

“We’ve really been working on our defense,” Vincent noted. “We have some people playing some back row positions they didn’t have to play in the past, so we have worked on crossing patterns, just digging in the back row, being outside of our blocks, being where we should be. I think that’s really come a long ways; they’re more confident in the back row.”

The win streak started with a five-set defeat of McCook Central/Montrose – one of the three teams to beat the Cossacks this season – in the third-place match of the BEC Tournament on Sept. 9 in Chester. Sioux Valley has won a pair of tournaments – Lake Preston and Sanford Pentagon Invitational – during the streak.

Burggraff paced Flandreau with six kills and three blocks. Brooke Iott had four kills and Kylee Iott contributed three blocks. Jaycie Pulscher dished out 15 set assists.

Flandreau (10-11, 1-3 BEC/0-3 LCC) returns to action at Howard on Thursday.

Sioux Valley, which hasn’t lost an LCC match since 2013, is host to Hamlin (4-0 LCC) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

“They have some really great middle hitters and they’re going to be great blockers, I’m sure,” We’re going to take a look at them on Thursday and see what they can give us, but we know that we have to be ready for some aggressiveness. They’re going to come with a lot of energy; we’ll have to get past that. They always bring a great match, so we’ll see what happens.”
