Cossacks top Pheasants in five sets

RAPID CITY – Sioux Valley bounced back from a five-set loss to Belle Fourche with a five-set defeat of Parker in a consolation semifinal at the Class A State Volleyball Tournament on Friday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The Cossacks won by the set scores of 25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 25-15 and 15-10.

“This was a classic battle of Parker versus Sioux Valley,” said Cossack coach Jill Vincent. “The teams put so much energy into every ball and every point.”

Sioux Valley (26-5) faces off with another Big East Conference foe in the fifth-place match, taking on McCook Central/Montrose (20-9) today at 11:45 a.m.

Rachel Miller dished out 63 set assists while adding 2 1/2 blocks (one solo), an ace and eight digs.

“Rachel played a phenomenal match tonight,” Vincent added. “She put the ball exactly where we would be the most successful. She keeps the hitters going and working hard for her. To make that work, our passing had to be the best and it was today.”

Nikole Ziegler recorded 24 kills, a block and 18 digs.

Lynsey Stevens had 20 kills, two blocks, a service ace and 13 digs.

Bryn Tvedt totaled 10 kills, a block assist and 13 digs.

Miakken Vincent chipped in with four kills, an ace, two blocks and 11 digs. Bethany Rennich contributed four kills, 2 1/2 blocks and 18 digs.

“Lynsey and Nikole were relentless at the net and really kept the defense off balance,” Vincent said. “Miakken had some very timely blocks and Bethany had huge kills down the stretch in Sets 4 and 5.

“Bryn had 10 kills and was very good defensively for us as well as on serve receive.”

For Parker, Hannah Vet had 21 kills and three blocks. Grace Leberman notched 18 kills, 2 1/2 blocks (one solo) and 16 digs. Raelin Jurgens totaled nine kills and two blocks (one solo).

Hannah Even netted 49 set assists, and she and Brianna Berens both came up with 17 digs.

Parker (25-8) plays Miller (25-6) for seventh today at 10 a.m.

The Pheasants were one of three teams to beat the Cossacks during the regular season, prevailing in five sets on Aug. 29 in Volga.

Sioux Valley split a pair of matches with MCM this year, as both went five sets.

The Fighting Cougars picked up an 18-25, 25-19,m 25-21, 25-17 win.

McKenna Kranz had 16 kills, an ace, a block assist and 15 digs for MCM. Morgan Koepsell added 13 kills and 3 1/2 blocks (two solo). Aleah Ries chipped in with nine kills, three aces, a block and 16 digs.

Emily Bies (25 and 11) and Hayley Miles (16 and 12) combined for 41 set assists and 23 digs. Harley Miles totaled 28 digs. Jacy Pulse contributed seven kills and a block.

For the Rustlers, Kadye Fernholz recorded 15 kills, 1 1/2 blocks (one solo) and 14 digs.

Semifinals

Top-seeded Sioux Falls Christian (30-4) and defending champion Dakota Valley (28-3) advantage to the championship match.

The Chargers, who have won five of the past seven titles, won by the set scores of 

Ellie Voss paced Christian with 16 kills, an ace and a block.

Kylee Van Egdom added 10 kills, two aces and two blocks (one solo).

Samantha Fykstra dished out 37 set assists and Emma Dorhout came up with 15 digs.

For the Lady Bulldogs (26-5), Olivia Rud had six kills, an ace and 1 1/2 blocks. Jessi Giles had 11 digs.

The Panthers won 25-15, 25-17, 25-15.

Meredith Lammers posted 13 kills, an ace and 15 digs. Elizabeth Lammers added 10 kills. Ally Beresford totaled five kills, three aces and 32 set assists. Nikita Reinschmidt contributed nine kills and a solo block. Alyssa Johnson chipped in with 14 digs.

For the Broncs (31-4), Sierra Ward tallied eight kills and Mandee Williamson tallied three to go with four aces and 1 1/2 blocks (one solo).
