Cossacks topple Rebels 14-0

VOLGA – Trevor Olson pitched a four-hit shutout while Nick Strasburg and Daymein Lucas had big games at the plate during Sioux Valley’s 14-0, five-inning defeat of Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on a windy Friday at Hoff Field.

The Cossacks, who were the visitors on the scoreboard, broke open a close game with 12 runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Olson struck out the side in the opening inning and finished the game with seven punchouts. He walked two batters.

Strasburg went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Lucas ended up 2-for-2 with a home run, a triple, three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

Strasburg led off the second with a single and stole second, before scoring on Chase Ringheimer’s hit. Lucas’ RBI triple with one out made it 2-0.

Strasburg got the big fifth frame going with an RBI double.

Later, Noah Puetz and Strasburg both had a two-run double, while Cole Gross plated a run with a bases-loaded walk in between.

Brayden Havrevold added an RBI single.

Lucas’ two-run shot made it 14-0.

The Cossacks scored three runs via errors in the inning.

Ringheimer finished the game with two hits.

The Rebels’ Riston Wolf went 2-for-2.

Starter Jeridan Jordahl gave up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 3 1/3 innings of work. Wolf pitched the final 1 2/3, giving up 12 runs – three earned – on seven hits and four walks.

Sioux Valley (3-1) takes on Chester/Colman-Egan/Flandreau in a doubleheader Sunday at 2 p.m. in Flandreau.
