Cottonwood Cardinals beat Cubs 9-7

BROOKINGS – In a back-and-forth game, the Cubs fell 9-7 to the Cottonwood, Minnesota, Cardinals on Friday. 

The Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of RBI singles from Jeff Fish and Sam McMacken. Cottonwood tied it at 2-2 in the top of the fourth with a two RBI single from Chris Berg. 

Brookings (6-3) regained the lead wehn Austin Koenig reached on an error by Tristen Groff, allowing Ty Schneider and Seth Fraser to score in the bottom of the fourth. Cottonwood would strike back and get their first lead of the night with four runs in the fifth inning.

The Cubs tied things up 6-6 in the sixth inning after a wild pitch allowed Koenig and Fish to score.

Cottonwood took a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning after a double from Jacob Nei scored Seth Plotz. They would add another run with a sacrifice fly from Jacob Rausch to make it 8-6.

The Cubs went scoreless in the seventh, but to within one run after a McMacken RBI single in eighth.

Cottonwood picked up an insurance run on a Groff RBI double in the ninth.

Koenig was hit by a pitch to give the Cubs two chances with the tying run at the plate. Noel Burgos lined out and Fish popped out to give the Cardinals the victory.

Kollin Hanson picked up the victory for Cottonwood. Nick Ross picked up the loss pitching two-thirds of an inning and giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits. Carter Gordon started the game for the Cubs and pitched four innings, giving up four runs on five hits. He stuck out eight batters and walked three. Curt Anderson pitched 4 1/3 innings for Brookings, giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out nine batters and walked one.  

McMacken went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Fish went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Jacolby Anderson went 2-for-4 and Burgos went 2-for-5.

The Cubs’ next game is at Valley Springs on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
