Cubs beat Minneapolis Angels at Atwater Tournament; title game rained out

ATWATER, Minn. – The Brookings Cubs opened the Atwater Tournament with a 9-0, seven-inning win over the Minneapolis Angels on Friday night at Chuckers Field.

Saturday night’s championship game between the Cubs and Litchfield Blues was tied 1-1 after an inning before getting rained out.

In between, Brookings dropped a 5-3, seven-inning non-tournament game against the Willmar Rails on Saturday afternoon in Willmar.

The Cubs (9-2) play host to the Sioux Falls Saints on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Friday

 Brookings 9, Minneapolis Angels 0 (7 inn.)

Kyle Krogman threw six scoreless innings and Ty Schneider homered as the Cubs rolled past the Angels.

Krogman surrendered five hits – all singles – while striking out 10 batters and walking four.

Brookings totaled 15 hits, six of which went for extra bases.

Schneider ended up 4-for-4 with three RBIs. Sam McMacken was 3-for-4 with a double. Krogman, Seth Fraser and Jared Tschetter added two hits apiece.

The Cubs sent 11 men to the plate during a five-run opening frame.

Krogman singled and JaColby Anderson walked to get it going. McMacken followed with an RBI single to open the scoring.

Jeff Fish had an RBI double and Fraser tacked on a two-run hit to push the margin to 4-0.

Austin Koenig reached on a fielder’s choice and Schneider followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Tanner Swets drove in Koenig with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.

Brookings extended the inning as Tschetter singled and Krogman walked; however, a fielder’s choice ended the frame.

Fraser doubled with two outs in the bottom of the second. Koenig hit a ground ball and reached on an error, and Schneider took advantage with a run-scoring hit.

Krogman opened the third with a two-bagger and Anderson walked. Krogman stole third with one away and then scored on Fish’s sacrifice fly – his second RBI of the game.

Koenig singled to get the sixth frame underway.

Schneider came up next and capped his perfect night by sending a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left field for a two-run home run.

Tschetter doubled with one out but was stranded.

Anderson pitched the seventh, allowing one hit.

The Angels’ Nick Sutherland ended up 2-for-3 with a walk.

Jack Feyereisn took the loss after giving up seven runs – six earned – on 11 hits and three walks with one strikeout in four innings.

Non-tournament game

 Willmar Rails 5, Brookings 3 (7 inn.)

WILLMAR, Minn. – Josh Tinklenberg drove in four runs and Matt Flaig pitched a complete game to lead the Rails past the Cubs.

Flaig gave up two earned runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts and five walks.

Tinklenberg, Garret Kooistra and Brayden Sunder each finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

Willmar put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.

Sam Vreeman got it going with a single and then stole second. Sunder singled with two away and took second on defensive indifference.

Tinklenberg stepped up with a two-run single after that.

Brookings’ Jared Tschetter walked with one away in the fourth and stole second. Todd Standish came through with an RBI double with two outs to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

Gunnar Banks reached on an error to open the home half of the fifth. Kooistra doubled. Sunder tallied a run-scoring hit and then stole second.

Tinklenberg followed with another two-run single to put the Railds on top 5-1.

In the sixth, Austin Koenig had a one-out single. Tschetter stroked an RBI triple to right and scored on Kyle Krogman’s groundout soon thereafter to pull the Cubs within 5-3.

Brookings put together a one-out rally in the seventh as Jeff Fish and JaColby Anderson sandwiched hits around Seth Fraser’s base on balls to load the bases. However, Ty Schneider and Koenig struck out to end the game.

Fish finished 3-for-4 and Standish was 2-for-4.

Curt Anderson took the loss after giving up five runs – four earned – on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Tanner Swets retired all three batters he faced, including two via strikeout.
