Cubs hold off Marshall for 7-6 victory

BROOKINGS – The Cubs built a 6-0 lead after four innings and held on to beat the Marshall A’s 7-6 in an amateur baseball game Saturday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Sam McMacken finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored. He started a two-out rally in the first with a single and Jacolby Anderson drew a walk.

Curt Anderson’s RBI double put Brookings on the scoreboard. Ty Schneider then reached on an error, which allowed Jacolby Anderson to score to make it 2-0.

In the second, Austin Koenig reached on an error, moved to second on Carlos Rodriguez’s sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a single by Skyler Cary, who went 2-for-5 for the game.

Jared Tschetter pushed the margin to 3-0 with an RBI double up the left-field line.

Schneider drove the first pitch of the bottom of the third frame over the wall in left field. The home run gave the Cubs a 4-0 cushion.

Brookings added a pair of runs in the fourth.

Tschetter drew a leadoff walk and McMacken singled. With two away, Schneider came through with a two-run single to left. He ended up 2-for-4 with three RBIs on the day.

Cubs starter Carlos Rodriguez earned the win after giving up two runs – one earned – on five hits and four walks with four strikeouts in six innings of work.

The A’s got on the board in the top of the fifth as Justin Mettling walked, moved to second on a groundout and scampered home on a double by Mason Penske.

Logan Tomasek doubled to open the sixth, took third on an error and eventually scored on a two-out error to pull Marshall with 6-2. He went 2-for-5.

McMacken doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Curt Anderson’s second RBI double of the game put the Cubs ahead 7-2.

Penske, who went 2-for-4, opened the seventh with a single and advanced to third on an error. Ryan VanMore, who finished 2-for-5, stepped up with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-3.

The A’s rallied with three runs in the ninth.

Nate Hoeft singled with one out and Tomasek reached on a two-out hit.

Both runners moved up on a passed ball, before Isaac Schmidt recorded a two-run double to make it 7-5.

Justin Greenwood had a 3-for-5 day at the plate, including a run-scoring single that pulled Marshall within 7-6.

Kenneth Negron took over for Carter Gordon on the mound and struck out Cody Greve on three pitches to end the game.

Gordon allowed four runs – three earned – on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of work. Negron was credited with the save.

Tomasek took the loss after surrendering six runs – four earned – on nine hits and two walks in four innings. Hoeft gave up one run on four hits with two strikeouts over the final four frames.

Brookings (12-2) plays host to the Sioux Falls Saints today at 7:30 p.m.
