Cubs hold off Milroy Yankees for 12-11 victory

BROOKINGS – The Cubs built a big lead early but needed a two-out RBI single from Sam McMacken in the bottom of the seventh inning to hold off the Milroy Yankees for a 12-11 victory during amateur baseball action Saturday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings starter Joey Texley threw five innings of four-hit ball, giving up one run. He struck out two batters and walked one.

The Cubs put up a four spot in the bottom of the first.

Jared Tschetter drew a leadoff walk and Kyle Krogman and Seth Fraser followed with singles to load the bases.

Todd Standish was hit by a pitch and McMacken drew a base on balls to force in a pair of runs. Skyler Cary followed with a sacrifice fly, before JaColby Anderson came through with an RBI single.

In the second, Tschetter and Krogman drew back-to-back walks and then executed a double steal. Fraser followed with an RBI single and Standish grounded into a double play to bring another run in, making it 6-0.

Texley retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced.

The Yankees’ Matt Bauer singled and Brayden Kvistero walked with one away in the fourth. Issac Schmidt’s two-out RBI single got the visitors on the board.

In the bottom of the fourth, Krogman had a leadoff single and, with two away, stole second. He then stole third and scampered home on an error on the play.

Brookings extended the lead in the fifth. Anderson got it going with a double, advanced on Kenneth Negron’s hit and scored when Ty Schneider grounded into a double play to make it 8-1.

The Yankees took advantage of a pitching change as Bauer, Kvistero and Nathan Duetz drew walks to get the sixth underway. With two outs, Eric Dolan stepped up with a two-run double. 

The Cubs took their biggest lead of the night in the bottom of the sixth.

Krogman singled and Fraser walked, before Standish drove in a run with a hit to make it 9-3. McMacken followed with a walk.

Fraser scored on a wild pitch, before Cary walked to reload the bases.

Anderson plated Standish with a sacrifice fly to put the home team on top 11-3.

And then Milroy scored eight runs in the top of the seventh frame to pull even.

Jackson Hughes singled, before Austin Kretsch and Andy Schmidt walked to load the bases. Bauer then reached on a fielder’s choice to plate a run.

Kretsch scored on an error during the at-bat of Kvistero, who singled to reload the bases. Duetz’s walk forced in a run and Issac Schmidt followed with an RBI fielder’s choice to cut the deficit to 11-7.

Kvistero scored on an error, before Eric Dolan and Derick Walker both drew bases on balls to again load the bags.

With two outs, Issac Schmidt scored on a wild pitch. Kretsch’s two-run double knotted the score at 11-11.

In the bottom of the inning, Standish was hit by a pitch and stole second. McMacken followed with what proved to be the game-winning hit.

Milroy drew a pair of walks in the eighth but came up empty.

Negron struck out side on 15 pitches in the ninth to pick up the save.

Tanner Swets (one) and Sam Froehlich (two-thirds) both gave up five runs on two hits in relief, combining for eight walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Carter Gordon, who entered with two outs in the seventh, surrendered just one hit, issued two walks and struck out one in 1 1/3 innings to pick up the win.

Krogman finished 3-for-4 and scored three times. Anderson (two RBIs) and Fraser both had a pair of hits. Standish and McMacken added two RBIs apiece.

For the Yankees, Dolan was 2-for-4 and Hughes 2-for-5.

Walker took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits and five walks with two strikeouts in three innings. Bauer, the starter, surrendered eight runs – seven earned – on seven hits and seven walks with three Ks in five frames.

Brookings (5-0) plays host to the Milroy Irish on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

MADISON – The Broncos beat the Colman A’s 8-1 in a Cornbelt League amateur baseball game Saturday.

Brock Selgestad pitched eight scoreless innings.

Heith Williams totaled a pair of hits.

Madison scored single runs in the third and fifth frames before doubling its lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the sixth. The Broncos again doubled their lead in the eighth, scoring four times to move ahead 8-0.

Ian Barker had an RBI single in the ninth for the A’s.

Billy Stitz, Deon Entringer, Mike Preheim and Chris Meyer added a hit apiece.

Entringer took the loss on the mound, giving up two runs – one earned – on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Barker tossed the final three frames, allowing six runs – one earned – on one hit and five walks with a pair of strikeouts.
