Cubs rout Valley Springs, win in seven innings

BROOKINGS – The Cubs improved to 10-9 on the season, as they used 13 hits and great pitching to shutout Valley Springs 11-0. 

Brookings was held scoreless in the first inning, but scored four runs in the second inning. Kyle Krogman led off the inning with a strikeout. Austin Koenig and JaColby Anderson followed with back-to-back walks. Scott Fraser then struck out and David Thomas hit a two-out two RBI single to get Brookings on the board. Ty Schneider singled to score Thomas. Schneider later scored on an error to make it 4-0. 

Brookings added three more runs in the third inning. With one out, Krogman hit a single and Koenig walked. Anderson then hit a single to score Krogman. Fraser was hit by a pitch to load the bases up and Thomas hit a single to send Koenig home. With two outs, Schneider hit an RBI single to make it 7-0.

The Cubs extended their lead to 10 in the fourth inning. With one out, Krogman hit a double. Anderson then reached on an error with two outs, allowing Krogman score. Fraser walked and Thomas reached on an error, allowing another run to score. Fraser would then score on a passed ball to make it 10-0. 

Brookings would add one more run in the fifth. Standish led off the inning with a single and later scored on a double from Koenig.

Valley Springs had the bases loaded in the seventh inning with one out. They needed to score two runs to stop the game from ending due to the 10-run rule, but grounded into a fielder’s choice and flew out to end the game.

Anderson pitched six shut-out innings giving up three hits and striking out eight batters with one walk. Tanner Swets pitched a shut-out inning and gave one hit with one strikeout.

Valley Springs did not get a hit until the fifth inning of play. They also had six errors in the field.

The Valley Springs starting pitcher pitched four innings. He gave up 10 runs, six earned, on nine hits with five strikeouts and five walks

Thomas went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Schneider went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Koenig went 1-for-2 with an RBI and 1-for-3 with an RBI. Krogman went 2-for-4.

The Cubs will face the Vermillion Grey Sox at 8 p.m. tonight.
