Cubs strike early, blow out Renner

AURORA – The Brookings Cubs struck for six runs in the first inning which propelled them to a 12-2 victory over Renner in seven innings.

Chaz Palmer led off the top of the first with a double, but the Monarchs were unable to do anything with it. Todd Standish led off the bottom of the inning with single and Jake Anderson followed with a double. Jeff Fish then hit Standish home on a ground out and Sam McMacken hit Jake Anderson home with a single to make it 2-0.

JaColby Anderson hit a double and McMacken was hit home on a Ty Kruetner single. JaColby Anderson scored on an error and Austin Koenig hit a two-run double to make it 6-0 after the first inning.

Renner was unable to score in the top of the second inning. Fish walked with one out in the bottom of the inning. McMacken made Renner pay for the walk as he blasted one over the left field fence to make it 8-0. Brookings was unable to score anymore runs, so that was the score heading into the third.

Renner had two runners on with two outs in the top of the third, but Kyle Gulbrandson grounded into a fielder’s choice. The Cubs had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the inning and Jake Anderson hit an RBI single to make it 9-0. Tanner Shepardson scored on a Fielder’s choice and MckMacken hit an RBI single to make 11-0 after three innings.

Renner was able to get on the board in the top of the fourth inning on a Mason Ohnstad single. They held Brookings scoreless in the botoom of the inning. Neither team scored in the fifth.

Renner scored one run in the top of the sixth to make it 11-2. McMacken doubled with one out in the bottom of the inning. He later scorecd on a sacrifice fly to make it 12-2 heading into the seventh. Renner went down one-two-three in the top of the seventh to end the game because of the 10-run rule.

McMackenm went 4-for-4 with four RBI’s. Fish went 0-for-3 with two RBI’s. Koenig went 1-for-2 with two RBI’s and Kruetner went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Marcus Heemstra picked up the win for the Cubs. He pitched five innings and gave up one unearned run. He gave up three hits, struck four batters out and walked four. Jake Devine pitched the final two innings and gave up one unearned run. He gave up no hits, struck out three batters and walked one.

The Cubs will play in Milroy, Minn. on Friday against the Milroy Irish. They will then take on the Renner Bullets in Renner on Sunday.
