BROOKINGS – The Cubs raced out to a 10-0 lead and held on to beat Renner 13-11 on Friday night at Bob Shelden Field, clinching at least a share of the Sioux Empire League title in the process.

Brookings scored three runs in the first and seven in the second.

Kyle Krogman got it going in the opening inning with a one-out single and Sam McMacken singled with two away. Jacolby Anderson walked to load the bases.

Ty Schneider stepped up with an RBI single and Kenneth Negron followed with a two-run hit to make it 3-0.

Austin Koenig led off the bottom of the second with a single and Skyler Cary followed with a bunt single. Krogman was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Jeff Fish came through with an RBI single and Sam McMacken plated two with a hit of his own to push the margin to 6-0.

Schneider singled with two outs. Negron stroked a two-run double and Jared Tschetter drove in a run with a two-bagger. Koenig’s run-scoring single gave the Cubs a 10-0 cushion.

Renner’s Grant Hieb reached on an error and Ryan Pruitt, who singled, scored on the play to get the Monarchs on the board in the third. Hieb scampered home on David Borchardt’s groundout. Chaz Palmer, who was hit by a pitch, later made it home on a wild pitch to make it 10-3.

Koenig and Cary got the bottom of the fifth underway with back-to-back hits. Krogman had an RBI double and Fish plated Cary with a sacrifice fly to put Brookings on top 12-3.

Renner countered with a seven-run frame of its own in the sixth.

Pruitt notched a two-run single. Palmer’s bases-loaded walk forced in Brandon May, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

Corey Vasquez and Borchardt tallied consecutive two-run doubles to pull the Monarchs within 12-10.

Brookings moved ahead 13-10 in the bottom of the sixth as Negron singled with one away, advanced on Koenig’s two-out walk and scored on a Cary single.

Pruitt had an RBI single in the seventh to provide for the final margin.

The Cubs totaled 18 hits.

Negron finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs.

Koenig went 3-for-4 and Cary was 3-for-5.

Krogman, Fish, McMacken and Schneider each totaled a pair of hits.

Carlos Rodriguez earned the win on the mound after giving up seven runs – five earned – on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk in 5 2/3 innings.

Fish, the fourth Brookings pitcher, worked around a pair of hits in the ninth, striking out the side to secure the save.

Vasquez and Hieb collected two hits apiece.
