Cubs topple Castlewood in back-and-forth affair

BROOKINGS – The Cubs beat the Castlewood Ravens 14-13 in a back-and-forth game Sunday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Chase McDaniel, Jared Tschetter and Ty Schneider drew walks to open the ninth. The former scored on an error on Sam McMacken’s batted ball.

The Ravens put up a seven-spot in the first inning. The Cubs built a 13-8 lead after six frames.

Carter Roach’s three-RBI double capped Castlewood’s five-run seventh to knot the score at 13-all.

McDaniel was 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored. Justin Devine ended up 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

Austin Koenig singled twice and drove in a pair.

Tschetter tossed 2 1/3 hitless innings to close it out and pick up the victory. He struck out three and walked a pair. Tyler Kreutner, the second of four pitchers, allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk to keep the Cubs in it following a tough start by Drew Talberg, who registed just one out while allowing six runs – five earned.

The Ravens’ Mike Stubbs was 3-for-3 with a pair of triples, three walks and three RBIs.

Brookings (19-4) plays at Brandon on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
