Cubs win ninth-straight game

AURORA – The Brookings Cubs came away with their ninth-straight win after beating the Sioux Falls Flying Squirrels 15-5.

Sioux Falls was able to put one on the board in the top of the first. Brookings responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Sam McMacken hit an RBI single and Jeff Fish scored on a JaColby Anderson fielder’s choice to make it 2-1 after the first inning.

The Flying Squirrels tied the game in the top of the second. The Cubs struck for four runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead.

Marcus Heemstra led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. Todd Standish was hit by a pitch with one out and K Krogman followed with a walk to lead the bases. Heemstra and Standish scored on an error. McMacken hit an RBI single and Anderson followed with an RBI double to make it 6-2 after two innings.

Sioux Falls was able to cut the lead to 6-3 in the top of hte third and held Brookings scoreless in the bottom of the inning. The Cubs held the Flying Squirrels scoreless in the top fourth and struck for four more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Krogman led off the inning with a walk and McMacken walked with one out to put runners on first and second. Krogman scored on a passed and McMacken scored on a Ty Schneider double. Tanner Shepardson hit a two-run single to make it 10-3. Brookings had the bases loaded, but was unable to score anymore runs.

Sioux Falls scored one run in the top of the sixth and held Brookings scoreless in the bottom of the sixth. They added one more run in the top of the seventh to make it 10-5.

Brookings answered with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sioux Falls walked  the first five batters of the inning to make it 12-5. Schneider scored on a wild pitch and Jacob Schoon scored on a Standish sacrifice fly.

The Cubs held Sioux Falls scoreless in the top of the eighth and scored one run in the bottom of the inning. Joey Texley led off the inning with a walk. Schneider then grounded into a fielder’s choice. Schoon walked and Schneider then scored on a wild pitch and the game ended because of a wild pitch.

McMacken went 3-for-4 with two RBI’s. Fish went 1-for-5 with two RBI’s. Anderson and Shepardson went 1-for-3 with two RBI’s.

Schoon picked up the win for the Cubs after pitching three innings. He gave up two earned runs on two hits. He struck out and walked four batters eached.

The Cubs will travel to Colton on July 7 to take on Baltic at 7:30 p.m.
