Curbside pick-up to continue with safety measures in place

BROOKINGS – The City of Brookings plans to continue the Curbside Spring Cleanup Program while utilizing precautionary safety measures to protect waste collection employees.

Citywide, residents can start placing rubbish, debris and branches on the boulevards in front of their homes beginning April 1 through April 12.

To minimize potential COVID-19 exposure, the city asks that no items be placed on the curb after April 12 to allow time for spring cleanup items to be untouched for a couple of days before being handled by collectors.

With the impact to the city’s operations, the timeline for pick-up may take a little longer than in years past. Also, for the safety of city employees, residents should continue to utilize their green and blue carts for household refuse and recycling, and refrain from placing it with their spring cleanup items.

The Brookings Regional Landfill is currently closed to the public. Due to the closure, free dumping at the landfill, which was originally scheduled to start on April 1, will now begin on April 6.

Starting April 6, the landfill will be open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Special Saturday hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 11. The last day of free dumping at the landfill will be Saturday, April 25, from 8-11:45 a.m.

Individuals who haul their items to the landfill should practice social distancing and refrain from entering the landfill office.

Brookings residents are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the free dumping by hauling as much of their smaller items to the landfill as possible. This will allow city crews to focus on removal of the remaining large items. The city thanks residents for their continued cooperation and patience during this time.

The city will be canvassing the town one time only. Households must follow the guidelines that have been put in place, or their materials will not be picked up.

The schedule for curbside pick-up is:

• Section 1: Railroad tracks to Sixth Street and from Main Avenue to 16th Avenue

• Section 2: Front Street to Sixth Street and from Main Avenue to Western Avenue

• Section 3: Sixth Street to 11th Street and from Medary Avenue to Western Avenue

• Section 4: Sixth Street to Eighth Street east of Medary Avenue

• Section 5: Railroad tracks to Sixth Street from 16th Avenue to 22nd Avenue

• Section 6: South of railroad tracks from Medary Avenue South to 22nd Avenue South

• Section 7: Railroad tracks south to city limits from Medary Avenue west to city limits
