Curbside pickup postponed

Posted

BROOKINGS – Residents can still put their unwanted items on their curbs starting Monday, April 2, but it’ll be an extra week before city workers haul them away.

Due to weather, the curbside pickup for spring clean-up has been postponed to Monday, April 16. All items must be out on the curb by Sunday, April 15.

The City of Brookings holds a spring clean-up each year. The program allows anyone residing with city limits to place their rubbish, debris and branches in front of their home during the designated time period.

Commercial haulers and businesses do not have free access to dumping. The City of Brookings Street, Park and Forestry, Solid Waste Collection and Landfill departments work together to clean up the material set on the boulevards.

The following items will not be picked up from the curb:

• Household refuse, place in green cart

• Cardboard, place in recycling cart

• Mixed piles will not be picked up

• Grass/leaves, haul to the Landfill for free

• Remodeling material/concrete

• Paint, drop off at the paint exchange

• Batteries/waste oil/chemicals/hazardous waste

The following items must be hauled to the landfill for a fee:

• Tires, fee based on size of tire

• Refrigerators/freezers/AC, $12 each plus sales tax

Schedule

The pickup schedule is:

• Section 1:  Railroad tracks to Sixth Street and from Main Avenue to 16th Avenue

• Section 2:  Front Street to Sixth Street and from Main Avenue to Western Avenue

• Section 3:  Sixth Street to 11th Street and from Medary Avenue to Western Avenue

• Section 4:  Sixth Street to Eighth Street east of Medary Avenue

• Section 5:  Railroad tracks to Sixth Street from 16th Avenue to 22nd Avenue

• Section 6:  South of railroad tracks from Medary Avenue South to 22nd Avenue South

• Section 7:  Railroad tracks south to city limits from Medary Avenue west to city limits

Brookings residents are encouraged to take advantage of free dumping by hauling as much of their smaller items to the landfill as possible. This will allow city crews to focus on faster removal of the remaining large items.

The landfill will be open 7:30 a.m.-4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday, April 2-28. Special Saturday hours will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. April 7. The last day of free dumping at the landfill will be from 8-11:45 a.m. Saturday, April 28.

Tree branch pickup

Remember that tree trunks and branches should not be more than 12 inches in diameter and 12 feet long. They must be placed lengthwise on the boulevard (same direction as gutter line). The City of Brookings will not enter residential property to pick them up.

Paint exchange program

The annual Paint Exchange Program will be Saturday, April 7, at the Brookings Regional Landfill. Citizens can bring in latex paint from 8 a.m.-noon to be recycled. From 1-4 p.m., the paint will be available to the general public free of charge.
