Curtis Norman Halvorson, 88, died on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2020, at The Good Samaritan Home in Canistota, SD.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, 2020, at Eastside Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, SD. His family will be present to greet friends for visitation on Thursday at George Boom Funeral Home & On-site Crematory in Sioux Falls, SD from 5 p.m to 7 p.m.. Curtis was born on Dec. 10, 1931, to Victor Norman Halvorson and Emma Louella (Gullickson) Halvorson of Sinai, SD, in Arlington, SD. Curtis grew up in on the family farm near Sinai, SD, with three brothers and one sister. He graduated from Sinai High School in 1952. Following high school, Curtis along with his brother, Vern honorably served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
Curtis was united in marriage with LaVonne Golay on Sept. 21, 1957, in Oldham, SD. Curtis and LaVonne were blessed with six children, Brian, Becky, Gregory, Allen, James and Mark.
Curtis, worked for many years on his family farm near Sinai, working his dairy cattle. In 1985, Curtis and LaVonne moved into Brookings, SD where Curtis spent 16-years with SDSU Dairy Research. Following his retirement from SDSU, he drove BATA buses until retiring again in 2008. He and LaVonne then made their home in Sioux Falls, SD. Curtis was a faithful member of Eastside Baptist Church.
Curtis lived his life by faith, family and his friends. He was blessed with the ability to talk and share stories with everyone. Curtis, would say that “there were no strangers, just friends he hadn’t met yet.” He enjoyed working his cattle, watching and cheering on the MN Twins and Vikings. Above all, Curtis loved and cherished his time spent with his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, grea-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, LaVonne Halvorson of Sioux Falls, SD; six children, Brian Halvorson and his wife, Lori of Brookings, SD, Becky Bruns and her husband, Dave of Sioux Falls, SD, Gregory Halvorson and his wife, Cindy of Owatonna, MN, Allan Halvorson and his wife, Ann of Alexandria, MN, James Halvorson and his wife, Twila of Raymond, NE, and Mark Halvorson and his wife, Virginia of Brookings, SD; 16 grandchildren, Holly (Bradley) Campbell, Megan Halvorson, Chad Halvorson, Kyle (Sarah) Bruns, Tara (Trevor) Weinrich, Bradley (Ashley) Halvorson, Steven (Jamie) Halvorson, Kristi (Kristopher) Bergstrom, Tyler (Ashley) Halvorson, Ryan Halvorson, Curtis Halvorson, Kasey Halvorson, Mackenzie Halvorson, Hannah Halvorson and Raymond (Marissa) Foster; 16 great-grandchildren, Emmett, Miles, Ben, Jack, Cole, Silas, Emma, Viktoria, Eli, Claire, Malakai, Hudson, Wyatt, Sawyer, Kyler and Kamren; one sister, Doris Autio of St Paul, MN; two brothers, David Halvorson and his wife, Lois of St Paul, MN and Ken Halvorson and his wife, Linda of Tumwater, WA; sister-in-law, Karen Halvorson of Maple Grove, MN; and a host of other relatives.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Vern Halvorson; and sister-in-law, Jean Halvorson.
