BROOKINGS – Officers found more than they were expecting when responding to what they thought was a motorcycle accident Monday, according to the Brookings Police.

The incident was reported shortly before 12:30 a.m. Monday and occurred in the 1000 block of Southland Lane, said Lt. Derrick Powers.

When officers arrived, they found out it wasn’t an accident.

The motorcycle was a 2014 Harley-Davidson Street Glide.

“It had extensive damage, several thousand dollars, and had to be towed from the scene,” Powers said.

“They were able to determine from the scene that the motorcycle had been parked there. A vehicle believed to be a Ford F250 hit the motorcycle and left the scene traveling southbound on Southland Lane,” Powers said.

“It was also determined that shortly before the accident, that the motorcycle had been vandalized as there was graffiti spray painted on it. Responding officers were able to determine this occurred a short time before the accident,” Powers said.

“As a result, we’re not ruling out that the accident and the graffiti are related ... that someone intentionally hit the motorcycle after vandalizing it,” he said.
