ELKTON – Two motorcyclists attempted evasive maneuvers Friday to avoid a cow in the road, according to the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.

The cow was fine, but Jonathan Gossett, 23, of Elkton, and James Hill, 24, of Youngstown, Ohio, ended up tipping their bikes and were transported by the Elkton Ambulance to the Brookings hospital for treatment of unknown injuries, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.

The accident was reported at 10:06 p.m. Friday and occurred near 210 Street and 486th Avenue.

“It was found that both motorcycle drivers were traveling north side by side at the above location, and came across a cow that was in the roadway. Both motorcycles tipped over attempting to avoid striking the cow. One of the riders thought he may have just clipped the cow,” Sebring said.

Damage to Gossett’s 1985 Honda Rebel motorcycle was estimated at $1,500, and damage to Hill’s 2004 Yamaha V-Star motorcycle was estimated at $2,000.

One of the drivers was wearing a helmet, and the other was not. They were treated and released from the hospital. Sebring said the cow wasn’t injured.

Also responding to the scene was the Elkton Fire Department.

The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office.
