Dale M. Olson, 92, Flandreau, died Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at Riverview Healthcare Community in Flandreau.

Funeral services are at 4 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Flandreau.  Burial is in Union Cemetery in Flandreau. Visitation is 5 – 7 p.m. Friday with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau.

Dale was born Oct. 8, 1925, in Sioux Falls to Julius P. and One Mae (Woodruff) Olson. His family lived in Tea, where he attended school through the eighth grade. Dale graduated from Lennox High School in 1943 where he was active in sports and played French horn in the band. During high school he worked for his dad at the Olson Grain Co. in Tea. Then he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving for 2 ½ years. Dale married Mert Barnes on Oct. 11, 1947 at St. John’s Parsonage in Sioux Falls. They lived and worked in El Cajon, California, and Sioux Falls where Dale was a bank teller and later a Red Star Yeast salesman. In 1960 they moved to Flandreau after purchasing the Coast-to-Coast Store. They sold the business in 1970 and Dale was a car salesman for a few years.

Then he was an insurance agent for many years until his retirement. Dale was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Kiwanis and a lifetime member of the American Legion. Mert and Dale spent their summers in the Black Hills where he enjoyed sharing his love for the Hills with the family. He enjoyed golfing, bird watching, fishing, canoeing and woodworking. Dale looked forward to hunting trips with his buddies in the Black Hills and camping trips with his family. He passed their Norwegian heritage and traditions, including the love of lefse, on to their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dale is survived by two daughters, Jo Barboza of Kamuela, Hawaii, and Jackie (Mike) Skroch of Flandreau; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Corinne Barnes and Joyce Olson, both of Sioux Falls.

He was preceded in death by his wife, son and daughter-in-law Jay and Carol Olson and three brothers, Don, Harold and Paul.
