Darwin Soma, 57, of Oldham, died Wednesday Nov. 1, 2017, at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, with his family by his side following a two-year struggle with lung cancer.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Oldham Lutheran Church in Oldham with Vicar Jess Carson

officiating. Burial is in the Oldham Lutheran Cemetery.  Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in the church and preceding services on Wednesday.

Darwin James Soma was born Feb. 28, 1960, in Madison to Richard O. and Marian (Jensen) Soma. He was baptized and confirmed at the Oldham Lutheran Church. He attended Oldham Public School, graduating with the class of 1978.

After graduation Darwin worked at the Oldham Farmers Elevator before embarking on a trucking career which took him from coast to coast. Darwin quit trucking in the early 1990s. He moved to Ohio for a few years, working as a mechanic at his father-in law’s shop, eventually returning to Oldham to work for Green Thumb Commodities. He spent the last several years employed as a crop adjuster with Agra Logic. 

Darwin was a farm boy at heart. Spring was his favorite time of year. He enjoyed gardening, especially sharing his bounty with family and friends. He had a spirit of generosity that allowed him to do for others even when experiencing tough times of his own. His grandchildren were his greatest treasures.

Darwin married Marjorie Angelo on Jan. 9, 1987, in Reno, Nevada. Together they had three children, Tyler, Lexie and Christian.

He is survived by his wife, Marge; his children, Tyler, Lexie (Shane Duffy) and Christian; four grandchildren; mother, Marian Soma; brother Rick (Susan) Soma and sister Shari (Scott) Lee; nieces and nephews, David (Kori) Soma, Jennifer (Brandon) Riedel, Tara (Justin) Holman, Josh (Steph) Wittrock.

Darwin was preceded in death by his father, Richard O. Soma, father-in-law John Angelo and brother-in-law Jeff Wittrock.
