Daum earns national, Summit honors

BOSTON/ELMHURST, Ill. – South Dakota State’s Mike Daum was named the Lou Henson Award National Player of the Week, announced Monday by CollegeInsider.com.

Daum, who was also the Summit League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, averaged a double-double over a pair of starts, putting up 25.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per contest. The Jackrabbits won both games and locked up the No. 1 seed in this weekend’s Summit League Championship while claiming the program’s first-ever outright regular-season championship.

He scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds against South Dakota on Thursday and followed with a 31-point, 13-rebound performance where he hit eight 3-pointers at IPFW on Saturday.

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball.

The award is named in honor of Lou Henson, who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois at New Mexico State. he is one of only 12 coaches in history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.

Daum has been named Summit League Player of the Week seven times this season, which is tied for the most in league history with former Jackrabbit Nate Wolters (2012-13). Daum has earned the award 11 times in his career, the third most on record.
