Daum, Jackrabbits handle Drake

BROOKINGS – Mike Daum scored 35 points and added 14 rebounds as South Dakota State beat Drake 87-74 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Frost Arena.

The junior tied a career high with 14 field goals on 24 attempts, including a 4-of-7 mark from 3-point range.

The Jackrabbits opened up a 43-32 halftime advantage and led by as many as 20 points three times – 73-53 (7:53), 75-55 (6:41) and 77-57 (5:54) – in the second half.

All eight players to see the floor found the scoring column.

Reed Tellinghuisen had 13 points and five boards. David Jenkins Jr. added 12 points and four assists. Lane Severyn tallied 10 markers on 3-of-4 shooting.

SDSU shot 52.4 percent (33-of-63).

For the Bulldogs (5-7), De’Antae McMurray scored 13 points, C.J. Rivers 12 and Reed Timmer 11.

South Dakota State (10-5) takes on UMKC on Friday at 6 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo., and then is host to Presentation on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. to close out the nonconference portion of its schedule.

Notes (from SDSU Sports Information): South Dakota State is now 3-5 all-time against Drake, but has won two straight and is 2-1 at the Division I level. … Daum went over 30 for the 17th time in his career and fifth time this season. … Daum passed the 1,700 points mark for his career in the first half. He is one of five Jackrabbits to accomplish the feat all-time. … The Jackrabbits have not lost a nonconference game at Frost Arena since Nov. 14, 2013, spanning 27 straight games. ...
