Daum leads Jackrabbits past Mavericks

BROOKINGS – Mike Daum posted a big double-double as South Dakota State pushed its home winning streak to 17 games with an 80-60 defeat of Omaha in a Summit League men’s basketball game Tuesday at Frost Arena.

The junior scored 35 points and matched a career high with 18 rebounds. Daum finished 15-of-28 from the field and did a majority of his damage down low, as he made just one 3-pointer and four free throws.

Tevin King added 14 points and Skyler Flatten 12 on combined 9-of-11 shooting, helping the Jackrabbits overcome off nights from their other two starters – David Jenkins Jr. (six points) and Reed Tellinghuisen (three), who made one field goal apiece.

“I’m really pleased with our guys’ defensive energy from start to finish tonight,” said SDSU coach T.J. Otzelberger. “I thought it was a very complete game on that side of the floor, which opened up some things offensively. I really liked our guys being intentional of trying to get Mike the ball down in the paint and then attacking from there.

“It’s just a really unselfish group we have and just a team win; a lot of great contributions across the board. But obviously Mike was sensational; Tevin King was great; Skyler’s been awesome; and I thought Brandon Key gave us great energy.

“You have to be able to win a lot of different ways and we needed to find a way tonight, defensively, on a night where Jenkins and Tellinghuisen weren’t what they normally are offensively.”

SDSU never trailed, scoring the first eight points and grabbing a 44-28 cushion at the halftime.

The Jackrabbits opened the second half on a 14-4 run – including seven points by Daum and four from King – to push the advantage to a game-high 24 points at 58-34 with 15:14 remaining.

UNO never got closer than 16 after that.

SDSU shot 46.2 percent (30-of-65) and turned the ball over five times. The Jackrabbits scored 46 points in the paint.

For Omaha (7-17, 2-6), Zach Jackson totaled 20 points and seven boards. KJ Robinson added 12 points, Daniel Norl 11 and Mitch Hahn seven to go with 11 rebounds.

First-place South Dakota State (19-6, 7-1) is host to North Dakota State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
