ELMHURST, Ill. – South Dakota State sophomore Mike Daum was named the Summit League Male Athlete of the Month for December, announced Monday by the conference office.

Daum averaged 25.4 points and 7.5 rebounds over eight games last month for the men's basketball program.

The Kimball, Neb., native shot 53.6 percent from the field, 40 percent from beyond the arc and 92.4 percent at the charity stripe for the month. He scored 206 total points while posting 20-point efforts in seven of the eight games.

Daum set career-highs for scoring in consecutive games, Dec. 10 and 17, scoring 33 points against Idaho and 39 against Murray State.

His Murray State total was the seventh highest scoring performance in SDSU history and came alongside a school record 16-of-16 (record in makes and percentage) mark at the free-throw line.

As well, Daum hit a school record 43 consecutive free throws between Dec. 7 and Dec. 22.

Daum was named the Summit League Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Dec. 19.

This is the first Athlete of the Month award for Daum, who is the second Jackrabbit to earn monthly honors in 2016-17, joining women's soccer player Maggie Smither, who was the Female Athlete of the Month in November.

South Dakota basketball player Allison Arens was named Summit League Female Athlete of the Month for December. She averaged 20.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game while leading the Coyotes to a 7-1 record.
