BROOKINGS – Mike Daum scored his 2,000th career point and South Dakota State completed a regular-season sweep of North Dakota State, winning 82-63 in Summit League action Thursday night at Frost Arena.

Daum finished with 31 points and 13 rebounds for his fifth consecutive double-double. He reached the 2K mark on a free throw with 7:16 remaining in the game.

Daum had 21 points in the opening half as SDSU led 37-32 at the break.

David Jenkins Jr. notched the first six points of the second to push the margin to 43-32.

Later, a 7-0 spurt put the Jackrabbits in control.

Daum and Jenkins both hit a foul shot, Ian Theisen converted a traditional 3-point play and Tevin King scored in transition following a steal to make it 57-41 with 11:43 remaining.

The Bison twice pulled within nine down the stretch, including 71-62 with 3:33 to go. Daum countered with a bucket, and King and Jenkins both went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe to provide the home team with a 77-62 cushion with 2:27 showing on the clock.

“I’ll start out saying, I’m really proud of our team,” said SDSU coach T.J. Otzelberger, whose squad has won 18 consecutive games at home and 11 of 12 overall. “From top to bottom – the coaches, the players, managers, everybody involved in our program. We had a heck of a stretch here with some games with short turnarounds and legs that are a little bit tired. And I thought that was a very resilient, gutty win across the board.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy; we knew they’re a very tough team. I can’t say enough about our guys. We’ve certainly proven we can win games being tremendous offensively; I thought tonight our defense certainly carried us from start to finish, wire to wire.

“I just thought it was really a great team win.”

SDSU shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field and turned the ball over six times.

Jenkins had 20 points and King totaled 16 points, going 4-of-7 from the field and 7-of-8 at the line, while adding seven rebounds, a career-high-tying six steals and four assists.

For NDSU (12-11, 4-4), Paul Miller had 17 points, eight boards and four dimes. Deng Geu scored 12 points off the bench and Cameron Hunter added 11.

The Bison shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) and had 13 turnovers.

First-place South Dakota State (20-6, 8-1) heads to Denver for a game Thursday at 8 p.m.
