Dellas Cole named 2017 South Dakota Sportscaster of the Year


BROOKINGS – Longtime “Voice of the Brookings Bobcats” Dellas Cole was named the 2017 South Dakota Sportscaster of the Year by members of the National Sports Media Association.

Cole received the award June 25 during the organization’s awards weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The NSMA annually recognizes a sportscaster and sportswriter in each state. Ryan Deal of the Mitchell Daily Republic was named Sportswriter of the Year.

Cole has broadcast Brookings High School football, basketball, volleyball and wrestling for the past 36 years. In addition, he has covered area high school sports, South Dakota State University, and local baseball and hockey games.

The South Dakota High School Coaches Association also named Cole its Sportscaster of the Year in 1986, and he received a similar award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association in 1997.

During the 36 years, Cole announced a BHS girls’ basketball team that won 49 consecutive games and was ranked third in the country by USA Today. He has also called two BHS football championships and a boys’ basketball title.

During his tenure, Cole has called games involving his son, step-son, step-daughter and wife.
