Deubrook Area girls set five state-qualifying marks

FLANDREAU – Several area athletes took advantage of gorgeous weather to set state-meet qualifying marks at Flandreau’s Booster Club Invitational on Saturday.

No team points were kept.

Girls

Deubrook Area’s Ashely Vandermeer set the tone with a Class B qualifying time of 12.69 seconds to win the 100 meter dash and teammate Shaylee DeBeer kept it going by winning the 100-meter hurdles in 16.28 seconds – also a state-meet qualifying time.

DeBeer out-dueled Flandreau’s Hannah Parsley down the stretch to win the open 400 – 1:02.13 to 1:02.59 – and then the Dolphin sophomore clipped teammate Josie Olsen in the 800 by two seconds – 2:29.90 to 2:31.94.

Earlier in the day, Olsen won the 1,600-meter run in a B qualifying time of 5:28.20.

The Dolphins’ Cortney Bauman also won two events – the 300-meter hurdles in a state-qualifying time of 49.06 seconds – and the 200-meter dash in 28.95 seconds to Parsley’s second-place time of 29.43.

Flandreau’s Madeline Hursey prevented a Dolphin individual sweep on the track as the Flier sophomore won the 3,200-meter run in 12:25.20.

The Deubrook Area quartet of Trixie Jo Schlechter, Bauman, DeBeer and Vandermeer won the 4x200 relay in 1:48.98, which eclipsed the B qualifying mark.

Schlechter also teamed with Emma, Ashley and Andrea Vandermeer to win the sprint medley relay in 4:39.46 and the Dolphin sophomore added a first-place leap of 15 feet, 3 1/2 inches to win the long jump.

Ashley Vandermeer went 33 feet, 8 1/2 inches – state-meet qualifying mark – to win the triple jump.

Sydney Stofferahn of Dell Rapids swept the weight events with a put of 34-1 in the shot and a throw of 105-2 in the discus to edge Flandreau’s Elle Thompson’s second-place throw of 101-9.

The Quarriers’ Kali Graham cleared 4-8 to win the high jump as Dell Rapids won the 4x100 relay – the quartet of Hanna VanOverbeke, Aspen Hansen, Ava Schuring and Samantha Verver crossed in 52.49 seconds – and the 4x400 with the foursome of Shaylee Hoff, Brooke Klein, Schuring and Hansen finishing in 4:26.20.

Deuel’s Kenzie Hamann, Morgan Kwasniewski, Kirstin Urban and Shaina Visser teamed to win the 4x800 relay in 11:22.62.

Boys

Dell Rapids dominated the boys’ events – winning 10 of the 13 individual events and four of the five relays.

Quarrier senior Hunter Hansen won the 100 (11.44) and 200 (23.87) while running a leg on the winning 4x200 relay – along with Derek Ahlers, Mason Schmidt and Tanner Heim – which won in 1:33.93. Schmidt also won the high jump with a Class A-qualifying leap of 6-3.

Heim won the 400 in 52.22 seconds and anchored Dell Rapids’ winning 4x400 relay team, which also featured Ahlers, Caleb Kirschenmann and Ryker Pedde.

Kirschenmann, Canyon Lowman, Karsen Welbig and Carter Wynja teamed to win the 4x800 in 9:17.53 as Wynja added a first-place finish in the 3,200 in 11:16.50.

Dell Rapids’ Anthony Miller, Adam Nagelhout, Blake Reider and Andrew Hegge won the 4x100 relay in 45.86 seconds as Avery Welbig won the 300 hurdles in 47.98.

Deubrook Area’s Aczel Garcia won the 800 run in 2:16.78 while teammate Jacob Johnson took the 110-meter hurdles in 16.72 seconds.

Johnson also anchored the Dolphins’ winning sprint medley relay, which won in 4:04.68. Trace Vierhuf, Ryan Berndt and Clayton Koppatschek ran the first three legs.

Deuel’s Zach Fieber won the 1,600 in 5:03.04.

In the field events, Dell Rapids’ Trevor Pulscher edged the Dolphins’ Logan Jurrens in both the shot – 40-9 3/4 to 40-2 1/4 – and discus – 131-1 1/2 to 114-3.

Sheldon Siemonsma won both the long jump – 19-6 3/4 to Berndt’s second-place mark of 18-9 1/2 – and the triple jump – 40-7 to Dalyn Bakkedahl of Flandreau, who went 39-6 3/4.

Bakkedahl also finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 17-9 3/4.
