Deubrook girls win Class B state title

SIOUX FALLS – There was no denying the Deubrook Area girls at the Class B State Track & Field Meet on Saturday at Howard Wood Field.

The Dolphins kept turning in solid performances and it resulted in the first track and field title in school history.

Deubrook finished with 78 points to easily out-distance second-place Parker, which ended up with 48. Gayville-Volin (42) and Chester Area (41) were third and fourth, respectively, while New Underwood and Newell tied for fifth at 39.

Four-time defending champion Ipswich ended up seventh with 38.2 points.

The Dolphins, who were runners-up to the Tigers a year ago, entered the final day of competition with 45 points.

Shaylee DeBeer, Ashley Vandermeer, Josie Olsen and Cortney Bauman closed out the meet with a runner-up finish in the final event of the day – the 4x400-meter relay – with a time of 4 minutes, 7.82 seconds.

Olsen had Deubrook’s top individual finish on Day 2, crossing in second in the 1,600-meter run in 5:26.84. She also took second in the 3,200 on Friday.

Vandermeer added a pair of fourth-place finishes after posting a mark of 15 feet, 8 3/4 inches in the long jump and clocking a time of 26.43 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

The sophomore successfully defended her triple jump title the day before.

Bauman finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 47.63 seconds.

Andrea Vandermeer found the podium for a second time, following up a third-place showing in the 3,200 on Day 1 with a seventh-place finish in the 1,600 in a time of 5:32.73 on Day 2.

Also on Friday, DeBeer, Andrea Vandermeer, Olsen and Bauman were victorious in the 4x800 relay, while DeBeer placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 34-1 1/2 and fourth in the 800 in 2:22.72.

Lake Preston scored all 20 of its points on Saturday to jump into a tie for 14th in the final team standings.

The quartet of Rylie Brown, Lindsay Hillestad, Ashley Neely and Ashlyn DeKnikker teamed to take third in the medley relay with a 4:28.43 clocking.

Brown was fourth in the 100 in 12.98 seconds and fifth in the 200 with a time of 26.91 seconds.

Ashlyn DeKnikker took fifth in the 1,600 in 5:31.33.

Neely, Hillestad, Karley DeKnikker and Brown took eighth in the 4x200 in 1:52.35.

Colman-Egan ended up tied for 36th with three team points as eighth-grader Olivia Baumberger placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 15 feet, 4 1/4 inches.

Arlington (3.2) was 35th and Elkton-Lake Benton (1.2) 46th in the final team standings.

Parker’s Karley Peters had an incredible final day, winning four events while earning Track MVP honors. The sophomore was first in the 100 (12.41), 200 (25.97) and 400 (57.42) while also anchoring the Pheasants’ winning 4x200 relay team (1:46.81).

Field MVP honors went to Wall junior Kyla Sawvell, who won the shot put and took fourth in the discus during Friday’s action.

Newell’s Delaney Leber won a pair of events – the 1,600 (5:15.39) on Saturday and the 800 on Friday.

New Underwood’s Brianna Philipsen finished first in the 100 hurdles and Cerington Jones won the long jump (16-7) as both were members of the Tigers’ victorious 4x400 relay team (4:05.72).

Boys

Colman-Egan rallied with 56 points on Saturday, but came up just short as Chester Area held on to take the team title.

The Flyers won their third team title all-time – and first since 1988 – by totaling 64 points.

The Hawks were second at 60.

Defending-champion Bison (38), James Valley Christian (37) and Colome (36) rounded out the top five.

Chester’s Riley Greenhoff won the 200 – the next-to-last event of the day – in 22.99 seconds and teammate Cade Larson placed fifth to help the Flyers clinch the title.

It proved to be key as Colman-Egan closed strong by winning the 4x400-meter relay in 3:23.81.

Bodee Groos, Walker Olivier, Cole Kriech and Kade Groos – who won the Region 2B golf tournament earlier in the week – teamed for the victory.

Olivier had another big day to close out his high school career, sweeping the hurdles events.

He crossed first in the 110-meter event in 14.82 seconds – 1.08 ahead of second. Olivier later won the 300 in 40.5 seconds – 1.43 ahead of second.

Olivier added a fourth-place showing in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.44.

Devin Lohr, Bodee Groos, Kade Groos and Kriech were second in the medley relay with a 3:43.2 clocking.

Kade Groos placed third in the 400 meters in 51.07 and Kriech (51.94) wound up in sixth.

Lohr, Kriech, Bodee Groos and Kade Groos took fifth in the 4x200 in 1:33.98.

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland ended up in a tie for 33rd in the team standings with six points.

Bison junior Daniel Burkhalter was Track MVP, winning the 1,600 (4:19.55) on Saturday and the 3,200 on Friday while also taking third in the 800 on Day 1.

Wall senior Allen McDonnell was Field MVP as he was runner-up in both the high jump and triple jump on the opening day.

Potter County’s Mason Stanley, Tanner Storer, Ben Krueger and Dawson Simon won the 4x100 (meet record 44.13) and 4x200 (1:31.9).

Chester Area won the combined team award.
