Dolphin girls repeat as Class B track and field state champs

RAPID CITY – Deubrook Area closed the Class B State Girls’ Track and Field Meet with a victory in the 4x400-meter relay en route to winning the team title for the second year in a row on Saturday at O’Harra Stadium.

Deubrook bookended the track portion of the meet with the win in the 4x400 as senior Cortney Bauman and juniors Ashley Vandermer, Josie Olsen and Shaylee DeBeer prevailed in a time of 4 minutes, 10.74 seconds.

The Dolphins also won the first event of the meet Friday morning, taking the 4x800 crown for the third time in a row. They were runners-up in the 4x400 last season.

Deubrook, which won its first-ever team title in 2017, finished with 84 points. Ipswich was second at 58.5, followed by Newell (47) in third.

Colman-Egan (37) took fourth. Lake Preston scored all 26 of its points on Day 2 and finished in a tie for 10th. Estelline/Hendricks, which racked up all 21.5 of its points Friday, ended up 14th.

The Dolphins entered the day with a 54-35.5 lead over the Lady Tigers.

Vandermeer accounted for 36 points – 28 individually – in the meet as she added a second-place showing in the 200 in 25.97 seconds on Saturday. Chester Area’s Makenna Larson won in 25.88.

On Friday, Vandermeer won the triple jump (third year in a row) and long jump.

Olsen placed second in the 1,600 with a 5:28.16 clocking, matching her finish in the 3,200 from the day before.

Bauman – the only senior on the Dolphins’ roster – took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.03.

Josie Mousel picked up a win to highlight a solid Saturday by the Hawks. She cleared 5 feet, 3 inches to take the high jump crown.

Reese Luze was fifth in the 1,600 in 5:37.21.

Mackenzie Hemmer found the podium in both hurdles events, taking sixth in the 300 (49.72) and seventh in the 100 (16.29).

Elizabeth Moore, Hemmer, Mousel and Olivia Baumberger ended up third in the 4x100, crossing in 52.18.

Moore, Hemmer, Haleigh Nicol and Baumberger placed sixth in the 4x200 with a 1:50.25 clocking.

Senior Rylie Brown led the Divers’ charge up the team standings on Day 2.

She was runner-up in the 100-meter dash in 12.68 seconds, .09 behind Larson; and added a seventh-place finish in the 200 (26.97).

Brown took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the two events a year ago.

Ashley Neely, Lindsay Hillestad, Ashlyn DeKnikker and Brown placed second in the 4x200 relay in a time of 1:48.6. Tripp-Delmont/Armour won in 1:46.69.

Brown, Neely, Hillestad and DeKnikker also took second in the medley with a 4:22.84 clocking. Kimball/White Lake placed first in 4:20.51.

Notes: In 2017, Deubrook Area totaled 78 team points and Parker was second at 48. Ipswich (38.2) finished seventh. … In 2016, Ipswich racked up 104 team points for its fifth consecutive state title. Deubrook (51) was runner-up.
