Dolphin girls win two events, take team lead in Class B

SIOUX FALLS – The Deubrook Area girls grabbed the lead in the team standings – thanks in part to a pair of event victories – following the opening day of the Class B State Track & Field Meet on Friday at Howard Wood Field.

The Dolphins have 45 points. Gayville-Volin is second at 36, followed by four-time defending champion Ipswich in third with 33.5 points.

Sophomore Ashley Vandermeer successfully defended her title in the triple jump after notching a mark of 35 feet, 3 inches.

Deubrook also won the 4x800-meter relay for the second year in a row as sophomore Shaylee DeBeer, eighth-grader Andrea Vandermeer, sophomore Josie Olsen and junior Cortney Bauman teamed for a time of 9 minutes, 58.46 seconds.

DeBeer, Olsen and Bauman were all members of last season’s victorious squad.

Olsen added a runner-up finish in the 3,200-meter run with an 11:51.47 clocking, while Andrea Vandermeer crossed in third in 11:53.77.

DeBeer placed third in the triple jump at 34-1 1/2 and was fourth in the 800 in 2:22.72.

Jayna Haufschild of Arlington and Elkton-Lake Benton’s Samantha Schindler tied for sixth in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet.

The Cardinals’ Brylee Hennrich took seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:26.35.

Boys

Oldham-Ramona/Rutland’s Bennet Trygstad found the podium in a pair of events.

The senior placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 49 feet, 4 1/2 inches. He was seventh in the discus at 143-11.

Colman-Egan’s Malik Poppenga was fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 41-8 1/4.

Colome leads the team race with 26 points, James Valley Christian (23) is second and defending champion Bison (22) third.

The Raiders have six team points and the Hawks four.
