Dolphins, Lady Elks advance to DVC championship game

COLMAN/ESTELLINE – Top-seeded Deubrook Area and third-seeded Elkton-Lake Benton won Dakota Valley Conference semifinal games on Thursday night to set up a Dolphin-Lady Elk championship game at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday in Colman.

The Dolphins topped Dell Rapids St. Mary, 48-29, in Estelline while the Lady Elks upset second-seeded Colman-Egan, 54-45, on the Hawks’ homecourt.

The Cardinals and Hawks will tip off at 4 p.m. in the third-place game.

In the consolation bracket, Oldham-Ramona/Rutland downed the host Lady Redmen, 42-40, while Lake Preston beat Arlington, 76-48, to set up the fifth-place matchup between the Raiders and Divers, which tips at 2:30 p.m.

Estelline and Arlington vie for seventh in a 1 p.m. game.

• Elkton-Lake Benton 54, Colman-Egan 45

After playing to a 27-27 halftime tie, the Lady Elks pulled away in the second half by outscoring the Hawks, 16-11, in the third quarter and extended their advantage with an 11-7 fourth quarter.

Callie Otkin scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead ELB, which improved to 6-5 on the season. Samantha Schindler contributed 14 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals while Rachel Hegerfeld added 10 points and six boards.

Jessica Wittrock’s 19 points and three steals led the Hawks, who dropped to 8-5 overall. Burgin Groos chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds.

• Lake Preston 76, Arlington 48

The Divers jumped out to a big early lead and then cruised to the 28-point win over the Cardinals.

Ashlyn DeKnikker led 4-7 Lake Preston with 17 points, to go along with five rebounds. Tara Scheidt added 16 points and a pair of assists while Meriah Flegel had 11 points, six boards, three assists and two steals. Lexie Larson pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while chipping in with six points as Karley DeKnikker finished with eight points, three takeaways and two dimes.

Braxton Donley posted a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds – 12 offensive – for Arlington. Michaela and Marissa Baker added eight and seven points, respectively, while Makayla Nelson had six points as the Cardinals dropped to 1-10.
