Donald C. Lockwood, 89, of Brookings, passed away unexpectedly, on Dec. 21, 2018, as a result of an ice fishing accident. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018, at First United Methodist Church, in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. 

Donald C. Lockwood was born on Aug. 8, 1929, to Frances (Bosley) and Norman Lockwood at Doland. He attended and graduated from Doland High School and South Dakota State University. He was united in marriage to Cleo A. Starr on January 7, 1951 in Sioux Falls, SD. He served in the US Navy from November 1951 until his honorable discharge in November 1955. Upon his discharge, he moved his family to Brookings and began his career at SDSU, working and managing the Computing Center for 38 years. During his time at SDSU, he was the public address announcer for Jackrabbit Basketball and Wrestling for nearly 40 years.

Don was an extremist in all of his many hobbies. He was an avid trapper, hunter and fisherman, and also read thousands of books over the years. He could also be found golfing, watching Jackrabbit athletics and raising a garden. His generous heart, led him to give most of his catch from the lake and produce from the garden to his many family and friends. He loved his family and held a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. 

He was a teacher of hunting and fishing, taking his grandchildren and many friends under his wing. 

He was a member of National and South Dakota Trappers Association, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Brookings and National Wildlife Federation, First United Methodist Church, American Legion and Golden Service Club. Through his involvement in many clubs, he was awarded with numerous awards in conservation and inducted into the former North Central Conference Hall of Fame for broadcasting.

 He is survived by his four children, Marvin (Laurie) Lockwood, of Yankton, Mike Lockwood, of Fargo, ND, Kathy (Brian) Peterson, of Brookings, and Pat (Becky) Lockwood, of Brookings; 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Devine, of Lake Elsinore, CA and Corrine Hanson, of Burnsville, MN; one brother, Tal (Faye) Lockwood, of Rapid Cityand many nieces and nephews.

 Don is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Cleo; one sister, Norma Nelson and brother, Joe Lockwood.
