Donors to be honored, cottage fundraiser unveiled at party

BROOKINGS – The 31st annual Garden Party at McCrory Gardens is set for 9 a.m.-8 p.m. next Friday, Aug. 3. 

Start off the day with coffee and baked goods from a local bakery at “Coffee at the Terrace” at 10 a.m.

At 10:30 a.m., paint scenery in McCrory Gardens with an experienced instructor during the “Annuals on Canvas” painting class. Registration is required to participate in the class and the cost is $25. A yoga class led by an instructor from Expanding Harmony Yoga will begin at 11a.m. in the Sensory Garden. Registration is required to participate in the class, and the cost is $5. Register online at mccrorygardens.com or in person at the McCrory Gardens Education and Visitor Center.

Take part in three guided garden tours in the afternoon. At 2 p.m., SDSU Extension Forestry Specialist John Ball will lead a tour. McCrory Gardens Head Gardener Chris Schlenker and Assistant Gardener/Education Coordinator Christina Lind-Thielke will lead a tour at 4 p.m. Amanda Bachman, SDSU Extension pesticide education and urban entomology field specialist, will lead the final tour at 5 p.m.

At 6 p.m. donors who made it possible for the Butterfly Garden to come to fruition will be recognized. The beginning of the “Cottage Project,” an effort to renovate and keep the cottage updated for years to come, will also be announced.

To wrap up the event, from 6:30-8 p.m. there will be a balloon squad, inflatable bounce house and caricature artist, and Phil Baker and the Friends of Murph will provide live music.

SDSU ice cream is also to be served.
