Douglas Dean Halseth - Arlington

Douglas Dean Halseth, 73, of Arlington, died in his home on Monday, Oct. 8, 2018.  Doug had been battling cancer.  He was a lifelong resident of Arlington. 

A celebration of life service is at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arlington with Vicar Brad Sanderson officiating. 

Burial is in the Arlington City Cemetery with military rites.  Visitation will be one hour before services in the church on Monday.

Douglas Dean Halseth was born on Nov. 19, 1944,  in Volga,  the son of Joseph and Cecilia Adeline (McGinty) Halseth.  They made their home in Arlington where Doug attended school. 

In Jan. 1963 Douglas enlisted in the United States Navy.  Doug served his country during the Vietnam War.  While in the service, he was stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin, which is located off the coast of North Vietnam.  Doug was a sailor on the USS BonHomme Richard and the USS Wasp.  

He continued his service until January 1967 when he was honorably discharged.  He was a member of the American Legion in Arlington for 51 years.

On July 9, 1966, Douglas married Sandra Quam. They lived in Arlington, where they made their home and were blessed with three children, Jodi, Corey and Darci.

Doug was employed by Horner Box Company, Great Northern Railroad, Land O’ Lakes, SDSU Physical Plant, Arlington School System and Global Polymer and Parkview Apartments before retiring.  

He served as a board of director member for the Parkview Apartments most recently.

Over the years, Doug had a passion for wood working, carving and building creative works of art.  

Some of his artistic creations included, whittling totem poles, boots and other Native American Art, carving wildlife wood figures, building furniture and constructing covered wagons. He was a truly gifted and talented artist.

He also enjoyed feeding the ducks and geese at Lake Arlington. 

He felt the ducks and geese enhanced the beauty of the lake and community. Doug was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed hearing about their accomplishments and activities. He was a kind and caring father and grandfather.

He is survived by his two daughters, Jodi Halseth (Duane Moe), of Brookings and Darci (Chad) Anderson of Tracy,Minnesota and three grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Barb Halseth of Hawarden, Iowa and his nieces and nephews.  

Doug was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Delano, and a son, Corey Dean.
