BROOKINGS – Downtown at Sundown is back for its fifth summer of free concerts on Fifth Street in downtown Brookings, the Brookings Convention & Visitors Bureau announced this week.
Every Thursday night from July 11 through Aug. 22, the community is invited to enjoy free family fun from 5-9 p.m.
Downtown at Sundown offers a family-friendly night out with free admission and free kids’ activities. Each week features a different local opener and headliner band, while food vendors and retail booths offer a little something for everyone.
This event would not be possible without the support of the City of Brookings and headliner sponsor First Bank & Trust.
The 2019 lineup includes:
July 11: Surfin’ Safari
Bringing back the golden oldies on the first night is Surfin’ Safari. Get ready to sing along to songs from The Beatles, the Beach Boys, Sam Cooke and more. This five-member band is sure to bring a dynamic vocal arrangement and look good while doing it in their coordinated clothing from the good ‘ole days. Encore sponsor is Wooden Legs Brewing Company.

Aug. 22: The Nathan Dean Band
Rounding out the season and leaving us wanting more is The Nathan Dean Band from Arizona. We’re bringing these four country guys back to close out the summer with a kick. They bring a whole lot of passion to the stage, featuring a mix of favorite country rock and roll roots, as well as a few originals. Encore sponsor is 3M.
Downtown at Sundown officially kicked off in the summer of 2015. However, the initial idea for a festival-like, outdoor music concert came from the Brookings community. In 2013, Brookings Economic Development Corporation conducted a charrette comprised of small focus groups representative of all ages and cross-sectors of the Brookings population, as well as a communitywide survey. The results clearly reflected the want and need for a festival-like community event and central gathering place for all ages.
After a few important meetings and creative brain power, Downtown at Sundown was off to a fast and furious start. Planning for the seven-week concert series begins in February, while each event in July-August takes an estimated 104 staff and volunteer hours to coordinate, set-up and execute. In 2019, new Downtown Director Ashley Biggar is taking the helm, under the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce.
