Drake sweeps South Dakota State in Summit League dual

DES MOINES, Iowa – Drake beat South Dakota State 7-0 in a Summit League men’s tennis dual Friday afternoon at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.

SDSU’s record fell to 0-5 (0-1) on the season.

“We have to commend Drake on their performance, they played very well,” said SDSU graduate assistant coach Ffion Davies. “In regards to our men, we fought very hard and were definitely in there at times. Elliot (Ward) and Marco (Paulo Castro) really showed that in doubles and Carlos (Martinez) did extremely well in singles. We really lack self belief at the moment and we need to take things into our hands instead of letting the opponent control the match. We need to come out tomorrow fighting and believing in ourselves.”

The Bulldogs swept in doubles to capture the point.

Carlos Martinez was the only Jackrabbit close to a win in singles, as he fell 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 5.

South Dakota State’s next Summit League dual is at Valparaiso on April 6 at 2 p.m.

Note: Drake (and Illinois State and Valparaiso) are affiliate members of the Summit League in men’s tennis.
