Driver hurt in car vs. train accident

ELKTON – A Lake Benton woman suffered unknown injuries in a train vs. car crash in Elkton Tuesday night, according to the Brookings County Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the car, 25-year-old Itzel Tattiana Vincent, was transported by the Elkton Ambulance to the Brookings Hospital, Assistant Sheriff Scott Sebring said.

The accident was reported at 9 p.m. Tuesday at North Drive and Cornell Avenue in Elkton.

“It was found that ... Vincent was traveling north on Cornell Avenue and did not see the train approaching the tracks. The vehicle then attempted to cross the tracks where it was struck by the train, causing extensive damage to the car,” Sebring said.

The 2006 Ford Focus Vincent was driving was a total loss. The train owned by Rapid City Pierre Eastern Railroad and a sign received some $750 worth of damage.

“The accident is under investigation with the Brookings County Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the car, Itzel Tattiana Vincent, is facing charges of failure to stop at a railroad crossing,” Sebring added.
