BROOKINGS – A Wisconsin man was arrested after he assaulted an elderly man Tuesday morning, according to Brookings Police.

The suspect, 23-year-old Nicholas Rodriguez of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, made his initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon and is being held at the Brookings County Detention Center on a $5,000 cash-only bond.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday, the police department received a call about “an individual that was pounding on the door of a residence” in the 1400 block of Yosemite Lane, Lt. Derrick Powers said.

By the time officers arrived a short time later, Rodriguez “had left the initial residence and was seen across the street at another residence, causing a loud disturbance,” Powers said.

“The officer then observed this male individual open a storm door to the residence and grabbed the male resident and shove him to the ground before making entry into the residence,” said Powers. The Brookings resident was 86 years old and “did not have any injuries that required immediate medical attention.”

Rodriguez was unknown to people at both residences.

“Officers immediately went to the second residence, made entry and took the male into custody,” Powers said.

“He was arrested and as the officers attempted to place him in the patrol car, he resisted, wouldn’t comply with commands, and as a result, a dry stun was utilized to assist in getting him in the vehicle,” Powers said.

“The arrestee had been drinking,” Powers said. “Upon a search of his person, he was found to also be in possession of marijuana.”

He was transported to the Brookings County Detention Center and is facing charges of first-degree burglary, simple assault, possession of marijuana, and resisting arrest.

Powers said he was not aware of any property damage.
