Elks cruise through semis

MITCHELL – Elkton-Lake Benton led throughout in a 54-36 defeat of Howard in the Region 4B boys’ basketball semifinals Friday afternoon at the Corn Palace.

The Elks – who advanced to the SoDak 16 – were up 16-12 after a quarter and pushed the margin to 33-15 at halftime. It was 46-35 heading to the fourth.

Matthew Nibbe again led the way, scoring 20 points.

Marcus Harming added 11 points, Miles Harming eight, Mason Gaumer seven and Aiden Erickson six.

Erickson corralled seven rebounds, with Nibbe and Marcus Harming both contributing four.

Marcus Harming dished out six assists and Erickson came up with three steals.

ELB shot 45.7 percent (21-of-46) from the field while improving to 18-4.

The Tigers finished the season with an 18-4 record.

Sam Aslesen scored 13 points versus the Elks.

Howard beat ELB 57-54 in the regular-season matchup Jan. 26 in Elkton.

The Class B SoDak 16 is Tuesday.

REGION 3B

HURON – Wessington Springs edged Deubrook Area 42-39 in a Region 3B boys’ basketball semifinal game Friday night at Huron Arena to advance to the SoDak 16.

The Dolphins held a 9-2 advantage after a quarter and led 22-17 at halftime. The Warbirds moved ahead 30-29 after three.

Mason Schleske posted a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds for Wessington Springs (18-4). Tyler Kole contributed 10 markers.

The Warbirds shot 27.3 percent (12-of-44) from the field and the Dolphins finished at 31.3 percent (15-of-48); however, the former outscored the latter 15-5 at the free-throw line.

Deubrook got 13 points and six rebounds from Andrew Trooien. Reserve Mason Shaw tallied 10 points and five boards.

The Dolphins ended the year with a 15-7 mark.

De Smet beat Castlewood 60-40 in the other regional semi.
