Ellie Abraham repeats as 800-meter champ

STURGIS – The Bobcats’ Ellie Abraham successfully defended her title in the 800-meter run as the Class AA State Girls’ Track and Field Meet got underway Friday at Woodle Field.

The sophomore clocked a time of 2 minutes, 13.53 seconds to win by nearly 3 seconds.

Abraham now has six top-eight finishes at the state competition.

In the 1,600, she was runner-up in 2017, third in 2016 and eighth in 2015. She added a second-place showing in the 3,200 in 2016.

Additionally, Abraham won the state cross-country crown as a sophomore and eighth-grader, while taking third as a freshman and fourth as a seventh-grader.

She is set to compete in the 1,600 today.

Ashley Anderson placed seventh in the discus with a mark of 112 feet, 7 inches. Amanda Schulte was eighth at 109-4.

Three Bobcat relay teams advanced to the finals.

Grace Eggebrecht, Kailee Bartels, Emily Rystrom and Cherish Stern posted the fastest time in the medley preliminaries – 4:19.59.

Abraham, Kylie Tucker, Ellie Hegdahl and Rystrom had the fourth-fastest time in the 4x400 meters at 4:07.34. In the 4x200, Eggebrecht, Bartels, Hegdahl and Rystrom advanced seventh with a 1:47.2 clocking.

Rachel Gannon finished 14th in the triple jump (33-3 1/4) and 22nd in the long jump (15-0 1/4). She was ninth in the 300-meter hurdles prelims in 48.06 seconds, one spot out of the finals.

Ainsley Powers ended up 12th in the 3,200 in 12:36.57. Emma Hardin nished 20th in the long jump with a mark of 15-5 1/4. Megan Gilk, Brooke Wika, Marah Dobrenski and Josie Bono took 13th in the 4x800 relay in 10:30.86.

Bartels just missed a spot in the 100-meter hurdles finals, taking 10th in the preliminary race in 15.71 – .06 seconds behind eighth place.

Also in the 300 hurdles prelims, Hegdahl was 14th (49.1) and Riley Weisbeck 18th (50.78). Olivia Jorgenson, Riley Weisbeck, Regan Weisbeck and Hardin were 17th in the 4x100 prelims in 55.34.

Brandon Valley (42.5) holds a slim lead over Sioux Falls Lincoln (42) in the team standings, while Watertown (39.5) is third. Brookings is tied for ninth with 13 points.

The meet concludes today at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City.

Boys

STURGIS – Brookings senior Dillon Jensen placed third in the discus with a mark of 150 feet, 5 inches at the Class AA State Boys’ Track and Field Meet on Friday at Woodle Field.

Isaac Conrad clocked a time of 1 minute, 59.75 seconds in the 800-meter run to finish seventh.

Seth Swedlund tied for 20th in the high jump, clearing 5-8.

Hossam Halaweish, Preston Helmbolt, Riley Schafer and Conrad were 11th in the 4x400-meter relay preliminaries in 3:35.94.

Carson Cody, Helmbolt, Schafer and Seth Swedlund ended up 12th in the 4x200 prelims with a time of 1:34.76.

Cody, Swedlund, Schafer and Halaweish finished 14th in the medley relay prelims in 3:52.29.

Eric Lam, Swedlund, Cody and Carter Eidem crossed in 15th with a 46.21 clocking in the 4x100 preliminaries.

Sioux Falls Lincoln racked up 78 team points on Day 1, as Sioux Falls Washington (41) is second and Rapid City Central (29) third.

The meet concludes today at O’Harra Stadium in Rapid City.
