Ellie Abraham repeats as ESD champion

WATERTOWN – Brookings’ Ellie Abraham won her second consecutive individual title, while Aberdeen Central swept the team championships in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Cross Country Meet on Saturday at Cattail Crossing.

It marked the fourth consecutive top-four finish for the sophomore, who was third as a seventh-grader in 2014 and fourth as an eighth-grader in 2015.

The top 15 individuals in both races earned All-ESD honors.

The Bobcats head to Yankton on Thursday. The state meet is Saturday, Oct. 21, at Hart Ranch in Rapid City.

Girls

Abraham finished the 5K course in 18 minutes, 49.15 seconds to claim top honors.

Melanie Jacobs led six Golden Eagles in the top 15, placing second in 18:55.92.

Aberdeen Central totaled 42 team points and Brandon Valley was second with 57. Yankton (82) and Pierre (92) took third and fourth, respectively.

Brookings finished fifth with 132 points.

The Gazelles’ Madison McClure was third with a 19:21.34 clocking.

The Lynx’s Haylee Waterfall placed fourth in 19:53.95 and Allison Rief was fifth with a time of 19:57.67.

Rounding out the Golden Eagles’ team score, Trinity Miller (20:16.61) was eighth, Jordan Hermansen (20:19.08) 12th and Abby Kopecky (20:32.36) 14th.

Brookings’ Ainsley Powers placed 19th with a 20:39.18 clocking.

Josie Bono finished 33rd in 21:51.03. Elizabeth Schaar took 41st with a time of 22:23.52. Brooke Wika (22:45.3) was 47th to complete the team tally.

Also for the Bobcats, Mariah McKibben (22:48.62) finished 51st.

Aaron Ryan and Jackson Harrison finished 1-2 as the Golden Eagles put four runners in the top nine.

Aberdeen Central totaled 39 team points, while Harrisburg was second at 65. Brandon Valley (74) finished third and Pierre (113) fourth.

Brookings ended up fifth with 116 points.

Ryan finished the 5K trek in 16 minutes, 37.94 seconds. Harrison was runner-up with a 16:38.44 clocking.

Charlie Wang paced the Bobcats with a third-place finish in 17:02.17.

Brandon Valley’s Britton Elkin (17:07.81) placed fourth and Harrisburg’s Parker Fitzgerald (17:31.78) was fifth.

Aberdeen Central’s Luke Jacobs (17:43.9) and Josh Mehlhoff (17:49.11) placed eighth and ninth, respectively. So Aung (18:20.28) finished 19th to complete the Golden Eagles’ team score.

Brookings’ Oscar Kavanagh finished 11th in a time of 17:52.38. Schaffer Vestal placed 22nd with an 18:27.39 clocking. Quintin Eck was 38th in 19:11.14. Isaac Conrad (19:59.13) took 50th to round out the Bobcats’ team tally.

Also for Brookings, Casey Pedersen (20:37.63) was 59th and Daniel Messerli (21:08.2) 64th.
