Ellie Abraham takes first at Huron Invitational for fourth win of the season

HURON – Brookings’ Ellie Abraham continued her standout season with a win at the Clyde Cotton Cross Country Invitational on Saturday at Broadland Creek.

The junior posted a time of 18 minutes, 58.94 seconds in the 5K.

Abraham has won all four meets in which she’s competed this season:

 John Collignon Invitational, Madison C.C. – Aug. 24 — 15:34.45 (4K)

 Augustana Twilight, Yankton Trail Park, Sioux Falls – Aug. 31 — 18:19.68

 Nike Heartland Preview, Yankton Trail Park, Sioux Falls – Sept. 8 — 18:32.88

Aberdeen Central’s Melanie Jacobs was runner-up in 19:17.66.

Brandon Valley took the team title with 85 points. The Bobcats were second at 98.

Rapid City Central (101), Custer (114) and the Golden Eagles (118) rounded out the top five in the 12-team field.

The Cobblers’ Makaen DeGeest placed third individually in 19:44.19. Aberdeen Central’s Zoe Douglas (19:46.5) placed fourth and Sioux Falls O’Gorman’s Alea Hardie (19:51.48) was fifth.

Brookings’ Jai Reienke finished 10th with a 20:05.22 clocking. Ainsley Powers crossed in 20:08.07 to take 12th. Kayla Shoup ended up 17th with a time of 20:22.31. Brooke Wika (22:12.57) was 68th to complete the team tally.

Brookings’ Maddix Archer won the girls’ junior varsity 4K race with a time of 16:35.88.


Aberdeen Central’s Aaron Ryan was medalist in the 5K in 16:04.25 and Sioux Falls Washington took the team title with 55 points.

The Golden Eagles (62) were second in the team standings and Custer (90) ended up third.

Brandon Valley’s Britton Elkin was runner-up with a 16:34.21 clocking. The Wildcats’ Nathaniel Youngblood (16:54.23) and the Warriors’ Merci Bita (17:06.24) and Chase Lather (17:06.66) rounded out the top five.

Flandreau’s Gabe Hobbie led the area contingent, finishing 43rd in 18:35.19. Teammate Austin Kulm (18:57.54) was 53rd, Lars Dailey (19:57.51) 75th and Liam Streitz (21:57.29) 93rd.

Elkton-Lake Benton’s Riley Hunter (19:10.12) took 60th, Miles Harming (20:06.02) 79th, Cameron Lorden (21:03.9) 86th and Marcus Harming (21:24.62) 90th.

Brookings’ Daniel Messerli (20:00.13) took 76th. Quentin Eck (21:13.8) ended up 88th.

The Brookings Invitational is Thursday at 4 p.m. at Edgebrook.
